Question about 1997 Dodge Caravan

2 Answers

The entire gage panel (speedometer, fuel level, gages,...)will go completely blank, sometimes for lengthy periods of time (weeks). I think it's related to the electrical component of the sliding doors that unexpectedly will do this clicking thing. Also, the precursor to the gages going blank is that the Check Engine light will go on and then the ABS light will come on. Sometimes I notice that when there is percipitation this seems to be a prevalent problem, but not consistently.

Thanks for your quick reply :) Do you know how involved and costly these things are to repair?
On the same vehicle I am experiencing air conditioning issues. The air blows, but never cools. Is this a freon issue? Are there places that will check the freon for free? If I need a recharge, any insight as to what that would cost? I have not been down this road before!

    Thanks again!

I just got through checking out the same van. It is most likely the instrument cluster or the bcm. Or even both.

My gas gauge in my 2002 Pontiac Bonnivile shows empty all the time

Fuel Gauge Troubleshooting

Fuel Gage
The IPC displays the fuel level as determined by the PCM. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level percent. The fuel gage defaults to empty if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the fuel level sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.
When the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value, the CHECK GAGES indicator illuminates.
DTC P0462
The fuel level sensor changes resistance based on fuel level. The PCM monitors the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor in order to determine fuel level. When the fuel tank is full, the sensor resistance is high and the PCM senses a high signal voltage. When the fuel tank is empty, the sensor resistance is low and the PCM senses a low signal voltage. The PCM uses the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor in order to calculate the total remaining fuel (%) in the tank. The PCM sends the fuel level percent via the class 2 serial data circuit to the IPC in order to control the fuel gage. The fuel level information is also used for misfire and EVAP diagnostics

My 2000 Chevy s15 Rpm and Gas Gauge is not working

I didn't see an s15 in that model year, in my database?
If the speedometer works but the tach doesn't, I think something is wrong with instrument cluster?
GM has had a problem with fuel gage sending units. The sending units are not hard wired to instrument cluster, they send signal to pcm, the pcm sends serial data to instrument cluster, telling the cluster the gage settings.
It may be possible to use different size resistors in place of the fuel level sending unit, to see if fuel gage reacts properly to different resistors, if the gage reacts properly, then I think the problem is the fuel gage sending unit.

2002 chevy malibu cranks wont start. fuel and temp gauge dont work. radio reads cal

Cranks won't start , Did you check for spark ,fuel pressure ?
Radio Setup .Will the vehicle communicate with a scan tool ? Fuel an temp gauges not working are probably bad step motors inside the instrument cluster that controls the gauges . Where do the gauges read 0 or something else ?
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The IPC displays the engine coolant temperature as determined by the PCM. The body control module (BCM) receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the engine coolant temperature. The BCM converts the engine coolant temperature into a percent gage deflection. The IPC receives a message from the BCM via the serial peripheral interface (SPI) indicating the requested gage position. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to 38°C (100°F) or below if:
?€¢
The PCM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.

?€¢
The BCM detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of SPI communications with the BCM.

Fuel Gage
The IPC displays the fuel level as determined by the PCM. The body control module (BCM) receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the fuel level percent. The BCM converts the fuel level percent into a percent gage deflection. The IPC receives a message from the BCM via the serial peripheral interface (SPI) indicating the requested gage position. The fuel gage defaults to E (empty) if:
?€¢
The PCM detects a malfunction in the fuel level sensor circuit.

?€¢
The BCM detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of SPI communications with the BCM.

When the fuel level is less than a pre-determined value, the low fuel indicator illuminates.

The PCM uses the signal circuit of the fuel level sensor in order to calculate the total remaining fuel in the tank. The PCM sends the fuel level percent via the class 2 serial data circuit to the body control module (BCM). The BCM converts this data and sends a fuel gage percent deflection to the IPC via the serial peripheral interface (SPI) in order to control the fuel gage. The fuel level information is also used for misfire and EVAP diagnostics.

My fuel gage registers empty when I just fill with gas

Most likely it is either the fuel level sending unit attached to the fuel pump or the stand alone unit (there are two sending units, both located in the tank), or, as counter-intuitive as it seems, it could be the speedometer assembly. Personally, I lean toward the latter.

Wont shift out of second, no speedometer, gas gage fluctuates

If the speedometer is not working and the transmission will not shift it is usually caused by a bad vehicle speed sensor. The fuel gauge thing is most likely not related. This is usually cause by a bad fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank.

the fuel level sensor is bad. I would recommend replacing the Fuel Pump Module which will be a new pump and fuel level sensor. If its been replaced already, sometimes using Chevron Fuel Injection Cleaner TECHRON will clean the contacts and MAY get it working again.

Fuel level gauge

some of this vehicles have a computer system, that will allow you to diagnose the fuel gage with an aftermarket sacan tool,
than most of auto repairs have, but i will recomend you to check also the conector by the fuel pump and make sure there is not any corosion or melting circuit inside the conector,

what the scan tool does is triger your gage and that way you will know if you have a bad gage.
