The order should be stamped on your intake manifold right under the air cleaner.
My '97 1500, 5.2, 318 firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

go to an electronics shop supplier and get a can of freeze spray.
it cools to -60f. let the jeep run until it misbehaves ,then cool down the ignition module.if it runs,you know it is bad. you could have either a heat related electronic issue,or something like a frozen egr valve ,or iac motor that keeps leaning and leaning out the mixture.
the catalytic converter could be plugged...usually a sulfur smell is with that and setoff the check engine light.
,the computer controls the idle and the fuel injection.
you may have an issue in the ecm itself. cooling down the ecm will let you know if there is an issue.
even a distributor cap that is cracked can heat up and fail
and the lead wires themselves.

The idle is controlled by the ecu via a idle control motor,check for air leaks and clean the idle motor with carb cleaner.

What is the engine code/s that are coming up?
Just state the digits that you see, I don't need the definitions. I would guess that it is a either a fuel or emission related problem. Possibly A broken vacuum line, MAP,EGR, IAC,EVAP, or so on. If by resetting the ECM, it makes the symptoms disappear. Then try to look at the readiness status. And as each system shows "COMPLETE", try to conclude which system may be connected to the low idle issue. The more you find the closer we should be able to get. Good luck.

On a carbureted engine(the days of old) I had a method of my own
which always seemed to do really well.
Warm up the engine to operating temperature and make sure there is no
operation of the automatic choke.This should mean that the choke flap in the top of carb is standing vertically offering no resistance to airflow.
Hook up a tachometer if the car has'nt got one.
Note the idle speed in PARK.
Turn the fuel/air adjusting screw underneath carb's right or left sideI(NOT the idle speed set screw) IN and note the rpm as you do.If it raises a little,you are getting close.
Go ahead and turn that screw in all the way and lightly seat it(count the turns in from the highest idle reading),then back it out to the highest reading.NOW turn it in slowly until you see the RPM drop slightly.
Now back it out a little so you are at peak RPM again.
REPEAT this with the other side's fuel/air screw.
After you have gained this higher RPM (maybe), then set the idle speed control screw to desired RPM, and be sure to get in the car and while holding the brake,put the car in DRIVE to make sure the idle doesn't drop too low. don-ohio (:^)
