The car is only at 82,000 miles, the engine check light always comes on due to sensors & such. But as I was driving the other day the brake & battery lights also came on & they are staying on. Is the car okay to drive?

Re: 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE Battery & Brake Light On.
No it's not you are having a massive failure or a bad battery or a broken alternator belt look to see if you have any belts missing then pull the battery out have it charred and tested at shucks AutoZone or first interstate or sear and see if the battery is ok, if it is then drive it into the same places and have them do a charging system check, it's free except at sears.

I had same problem on my 2001 sentra gxe, no crank but dash lights up. thought it was the immobilizer system. found a blown fuse in the panel under the dash drivers side. 10 amp fuse labeled engine control
the switch for your brake lights is located near your brake pedal,it is usually a spring loaded switch that comes out when the pedal is pushed & the pedal pushes it back in when it is released, this switch may have come loose & is active all the time, you need to make sure that it is pushed hard up against the brake pedal & tighten the adjusting screws to lock it in position, check that your stop lights come on when the brake pedal is pushed in....hope this helps....cheers
You could have faulty altenator or short causing the battery to drain. The engine light usually comes on when anything electrical or sensor wise is faulty. Brake light will come on if, low brake fluid, e-brake handle is up.
You will need a new catalytic convertor assembly. Yours is below treshold efficiency in other words its "no good".If you have it replaced, ask the garage/dealer to give you the old one back. Its worth some cash if its full. It doesn't matter thet it failed. They are going after the mesh inside of it and that is worth some $$$$. May not be much , but better than nothing.
Check the fluid level in the brake reservoir. The sensor in it may be detecting low fluid. This usually means you need a brake job since the rotors/pad/shoes have worn down.
The battery light may be caused by the alternator not charging. Check the drive belt - it could be loose. You can get the charging system check at Sears and some auto parts stores. Call around.
