You have to have someone plug a scanner up to your computer it will tell what made the light come on.Advance auto does it for free. After you find out the code the scanner gives you a mechanic may have to help decide what needs to be done to fix it.There are websites you can look up OBD codes and get help determining what the problem is

Engine light blinks once and stays on

Typically, a flashing light is more serious than a solid check-engine light. The flashing light is meant to alert you that you may have a misfire in your engine that will cause catalytic converter damage if you leave the problem unresolved. Replacing a catalytic converter can be costly, so have the engine checked as soon as possible by a certified mechanic.
A flashing check-engine light generally indicates that there is a failure in the emission control system. The emission control system contains an array of sensors that work to reduce the amount of pollution released into the air. An oxygen sensor reads the air and fuel mixture and lights up when it is out of range. The acceptable range is between 50 millivolts and 800 mV. If the check-engine light is flashing, you should visit your mechanic or dealer as soon as possible.

WHY DOES VSC & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYON

diagnostic reader and or workshop time required to
to fix both VSC and engine light faults /codes

VSC is brake /traction related ..... this is one explanation

It would appear that system braking, traction control, and possibly some anti rollover control is dis abled if this warning light is on. So it is both fuel in efficient and possibly dangerous to drive with this light on.

engine light

there are stored fault codes in the engine computer module pointing to faulty sensors on the car needing to be checked or replaced

The oil light came on and it wont start up

Possibly out of oil, possible faulty oil pressure sending unit, possibly engine locked up from lack of oil. I wouldn't recommend even trying to start the engine until you find out why the light came on.

Service engine soon

It is very possible that the light needs to be reset, but it is also possible that the check engine light could be a completely new failure in your engine.I would suggest taking the vehicle back to where it was serviced and they should have no problem at all scanning it for you.Hope I could help!!! Thanks!!

Check engine light was on then went off now back onagain

Q1: What to do if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A1: The simplest way is to visit your local dealer for proper diagnostic. They have all the equipment and information needed to correct the problem. The problem might even be covered by the manufacturers warranty and possibly repaired free of charge.

Q2: Is it safe to drive if my "Check Engine" light is on?
A2: It really depends what code is stored and what caused it. In worst cases driving with "Check engine" light may cause more damage to the vehicle. A car may even stall while driving. If your check engine light came on, I'd certainly recommend to visit your dealer or a mechanic as soon as possible, just to be on a safe side. If the Check Engine light is flashing, this means that the engine computer (ECM) has detected that your engine is misfiring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Have the your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
