Thanks Greg. Unfortunately it is a new starter. But I think you are still right. I felt the starter after the engine was hot and would not start and the starter and solenoid was really hot. Why would a starter get so Hot? I know they emphasized the Bushing that goes on the end of the starter when installing. Could this be an issue. May be I need to remove starter and bushing, clean it up and reinstall? EB.

It's your starter. When a faulty starter is cold, it will function but once it warms up, it requires more and more power to get it to work. Although you may have sufficient power to turn on the lights radio etc... a starter requires much more power to engage. A new starter should solve your problem. Best of luck.

When you remove the starter, bench test it. There's always a chance that a rebuilt starter wasn't correctly rebuilt. A starter for your VDub isn't all that common anymore so there's always a chance you got a bad one. If after you bench test the starter ( or have it tested at an auto parts store that features this service) if it tests fine, then I would clean everything up and pay special attention to the solenoid.

If he installed a new or remanufatured starter, I would suspect a weak battery possibly. If he installed a used starter, I would say the starter is bad. A hot engine is harder to crank than a cold engine and if the starter is marginal it will act the way you described. Try boosting your vehicle the next time it's hot, or get your battery load tested by a reputable shop that doesn't sell batteries. I have had experience with remanufactured starters that were no better than the unit I removed from the vehicle. Have him get a second reman and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

When engine is hot motor does not want to turn over, sort of like weak battery, after it cools it starts with no problem. sounds like timing problem, which way do you turn distributor?

You have a worn out starter then. The armature gets hot as you drive and will swell tight against the fields inside the starter. Upon when its cooled off the swelling subsides letting the starter to operate again

Starter not working when engine gets hot

Starter is weak. replace the starter and see if that fixes your prob. Once the starter gets hot, its not making good connection inside the starter housing, making it turn over slowly

93 Toyota Paseo 1.5 lit, 5 speed will not start when hot

The starter won't get hot while the car is running. The starter only works while you are cranking it over. After running a while and the car is hot, feel if your battery is not over heating. If the vaultage regulator in the alternator is bad the battery may be overcharging causing it to over heat and not want to work when boiling. After it cools down it may work again.
I this will help.
