Fuel problem i would have thought , check out the fuel pump and relay , fuel pressure , have the OBD codes read as should tell you what sensor/switch is at fault

Check the fuel pressure at the filter. Odds are the lift pump, located below the filter, is toast. Continual cranking of the motor with a bad LP wil cause the injector pump to heat up and burn out. Replace the LP and fuel filter. Bleed the system by cracking the inlet to the injector pump and bumping the enigine over so the LP will run. Once you have fuel at the injector pump, crack injectors 1,3,and 4. Crank the motor for no more 6 or 7 seconds at a time until it turns over. Give the pump time to cool for a couple of mintues between cranks. This process is easier with two people, one to crank and the other to watch for fuel and tighten the injectors once it starts. If the injector pump is fried at this point from cranking with no fuel, the motor should idle, but will stumble all over itself when the throttle is applied.

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.

1999 Dodge Ram ?electrical problem?

Sounds like your speed sensor on the rear end. Could just be a loose connection check the harness is securely pluged into to sensor. I know on my 02 ram I have abs sensors that go in to my hub bearings, if you have this that could also be your problem. when i installed my new hubs I bent the tab on the connector to far and my light came on and off during driving. I had to tap down my connector.

My 1999 dodge ram 5.2 liter 5 speed will start up fine then..

It runns OK when you first start it? This is a stick shift truck? They are prone to a vacume leak in the bottom of the intake manifold. To checki this pu;; the PCV valve out of the valve cover and plug the hole in the cover and let the valve just hang there, Remove the hose from the other side valve cover and plug the valve cover ( the hose goes to the air filter housing ) Run the truck with both of these plugged and if it fixes the problem. Remove the intake manifold and change the gaskets. This is a common problem and for a while there the dealers were covered up with this job.
