Can you tell me where the fuel pump is located and how to remove it from a 1997 Ford Thunderbird?

My car won't start without starting fluid. The fuel pump does not come on.I want to know where the pump is located and how to replace it.

The fuel pump is inside the gas tank.. you must remove the tank to get at the fuel pump.. Before you do this You bcan check the relay to see if it works.. When yyou turn your ke6y to the start position.. you usually cne hear the relay click then about 1.5 seconds later it clicks again.. This is to charge the fuel sustem.. YOu can jump the fuel pump by installing a wire directly to the positive side of the fuel pump plug.. The plug is around the tank.. usually in the rear of the tank on a fuel tank harness. if you find the right connection power up the wire.. the fuel pump will run which will tell you if the pump is functioning..

Just because the pump is running does not mean it is pumping fuel.. try starting the engine if it runs..Another posibilty is the fuel filter clogged.. remove it and check to see if its open.. I have actually seen several cars that was nothing more than the fuel filter..

SOURCE: 1997 Ford F150 Electric Fuel Pump will npt pump

Did you check the fuel inertia switch in the passenger side kick panel ?

The fuel pump is powered :
the fuse to the fuel pump relay.
The fuel pump relay to the fuel inertia switch
The fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump itself.

At the fuel inertia switch in the kick panel, power from the relay is the Dark Green w/ Yellow stripe wire and the pink w/ black stripe wire is the power. from the fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump.

If you jumper the fuel pump relay, you should hear it run. If not pull the fuel pump relay, and check the pins in the relay socket, pin 30 should be the power from the fuse.

50b0c31.jpg

If you have power at pin #30, jumper the relay socket as shown with the red line above, and check the dark green w/ yellow stripe wire at the fuel inertia switch for power.
Press the button on the top of the fuel inertia switch, and check for power leaving the fuel inertia switch on the pink w/ black stripe wire.

This is tests good, check for power at the fuel pump, same pink w/ black stripe wire.
Fuel inertia switch info is in the owners manual, If you did not get an owners manual with your truck ( purchased used ), you can download one from Ford :

SOURCE: no power to fuel pump car was running fine just

Check for 12 volts power at the fuel pump harness. If no power is going to the pump, check the fuel pump relay. Also, check the fuel pump inertia switch. Ford usually has it on either inside left or right rear trunk fenders.

SOURCE: need help replacing fuel pump. 1996 ford

Disconnect the battery & any fuel lines you can and the same with electrical connectors first of all. Drain the tankwith a siphon pump if 3 gallons or more of fuel is present. It gets heavy to replace back in and dangerous too.. Have the tank supported now & remove the bolts from the tanks mounting straps. Drop the tank down about 6 inches and check for other connection that need to be removed
RFemove the center retainer to remove the fuel pump with the sending unit
I would replace both items since it is an older car and also replace the filter sock to the pump too
Reverse this procedure to install

You will need to pump the fuel from the fuel tank using a fluid evacuator and then the fuel tank will need to be dropped to access the in tank fuel pump.

How do I replace the faulty fuel pump in my 1997 Ford Thunderbird?

Check your fuel pump relay and fuel pump fuse first. Once you have determined that they are ok. Open the gas door and remove the 3 bolts securing the fill tube. This will make the job a little easier. I personally leave it attached because it can be a pain to reattach. You will need to jack up the rear of the car and place jack stands under the car. Make sure the car is on level ground and the front wheels or chocked or blocked to keep the car from rolling.Safety first. An empty gas tank is a lot easier to handle but if it has fuel still in it, you might want to have a friend help. Undue the gas tank straps, theirs 2 with a bolt at each end Remove one strap and then support the tank, with a jack in the middle of the tank or a (friend) and remove the other strap. Be careful not to pull on the tank as you can break the fuel lines. To remove the fuel lines you will need a fuel line removed tool, most parts stores carry them, or fuel line couplers and hose clamps as you can cut the rubber fuel hoses. Where the fuel lines attach to the gas tank, that\'s the fuel pump,it will have a lock ring that needs to be unscrewed. There should be tabs sticking up, gently tap (it will be stubborn) with a flathead screw driver and hammer, moving from tab to tab. shouldn\'t matter what direction. Do not destroy it,as you need to use it for the new pump. Once the lock ring is out. Simply lift out the pump. Installation is the reverse. Just take your time.

My 96 crown vic police interceptor, cranks won't start without spraying starter fluid.. the car won't start without spraying starter fluid into air intake hose to carb...

starting fluid is a thing of the past. dont use it. this car doesnt have a carb, its a throttle body/ electronic fuel injection system. you most likely have a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator issue. test the fuel pressure, should be anywheres from 35-50 psi

Car has been sitting; will turn over but won't start. Used starting fluid and car starts but quits. Won't fire without starting fluid. There is fuel in the tank. Help!!

My first thought is to check the fuel pump operation.
Check to see if fuel pump is getting power.

This is how I check the pump.

Usually there is an in-line fuel filter that can be removed.
While its removed...bump the starter to see if gas shoots out the gas line.
If not, there might be a clog at the pump...or the pump needs replacing.

Hope this helps...

Hi, have you checked the fuel pump relay? It is turned on by the PCM. You can try swapping it with a similar relay in the box under the hood. If that doesn't work, probe the relay socket with a 12 volt test light to see what's going on. With the key off, there should be one hot terminal in the relay socket. With the key on, there should be 2 hot terminals and one ground terminal. To find the ground terminal, hook the test light clip to battery positive and probe the socket. A grounded terminal will light the light brightly. The pump terminal should light the light dimly. The 2 hot terminals should not light the light at all. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.
