Since your car has no issues running see if the TCS is damaged or there is a short or damaged wire in the wiring harness, the TCS did not cycle during the self-test which may be faulty or the PCM has failed.

Hi,

The above code refers to
P1780 - Transmission Switch Out of Self-Test Range
During KOER self-test the TCS has to be cycled, if not cycled a DTC is set.

  • TCS circuit short or open
  • Damaged TCS switch
  • Damaged PCM

Verify the TCS switch cycles ON/OFF
Hope i have helped you.

Thanks for using 'Fixya'.

If no drive ability issues, erase code and see if it comes back. If code returns have a good tech. diagnose and estimate repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

07 sport trac DTC code P1780 trans control switch (O/D Cancel) out of self test range. why does it affect starting and running ? it'll jump and **** then crank and run great then suddenly sputtering again...

The truck's computer uses input from that switch to control transmission shifting. When that circuit has a fault, it will cause running problems. You need to first check the wiring harness going to the switch VERY carefully for damage. If no damage is found, replace the switch. If the code comes back after you replace the switch, it means you have internal, mechanical damage to the transmission. [In other words, the transmission must be disassembled and repaired or replaced]

1780

P1780 is a FoMoCo proprietary code and the verbiage is in fact "transmission control switch out of self-test range". This DTC can only occur during a KOER self-diagnostic. 99.9% of the time, if you see this DTC, it's because when the KOER self-diagnostic was run, the TCS was not cycled as required. Simple.

The troubleshooting procedure for this is quite easy, however if you have no transmission related driveability issues, you can be assured that it was just that the TCS button got missed. My guess is that the steering wheel didn't get turned 1/4 turn and the brake pedal probably wasn't pushed either. Oops.

I need a new Trans for a 1996 ford Taurus GL wagon.

The best way is to use the vehicle VIN number, here is a link to a Ford Vin Number Look-up site, that will tell you the transmission code and the type of transmission you have:

1996 Ford Taurus LX wagon. 3.0L 24v Duratec. Stalled leaving red light then no power at all. Towed home. Starter tests passed at home by manually putting power from B+ to 's' clip on starter. Starter also...

I would look at the positive cable at the battery and at the starter. Pull the cabel off and a continuity test to see if the wire has a internal break if the wire gets even a pinhole it can build corrosion on the inside of the wire and when a current is put through it it seperates (from the resistance and arc from corrosion) causing the wire to seperate internaly.

Hope this will get you started!

As for obtaining the dipstick. You might try Napa. If not Napa, then a Ford Dealer. I doubt the dip stick is the end of your troubles here, though.
