My 96 explorer started doing that about 12 months ago, turns out there was a problem with the drive chain, the motor is a chain driven motor, this turned out to be a very expensive problem to fix.

The thump is probably a bad axle in the front. Common problem

Your looking at around $100 for the axle, but if you don't know anyone to change it for you, a garage will probable get you for another $150 in labor

that is an poorly built vehicle. They have electrical issues, as well as reliability issues. Maybe a 96 camry/corolla will be a better opt. I have a 96 camry with 220K miles and never had any issues. Hopefully this helpd

Well its a good car, but that higher miles.

You could have no problems, or ya could have alot.

Its all about what ya want to pay and the shape its in.

If it was well taken care of then it could be a good car.

try a salvge yard or at Ford dealership,be careful that from 92-96 they have changed alot, between light duty an heavy duty, and the difference in years as well. But i think you will be ok with used from 94-96,and i think that the heavy duty has a ratchet nut verses just a nut to hold the hub on

What should I check before buying camaro with 125,00 miles

Check to see if all lights and accssesories are working. Check engine oil for discoloration and "burnt" snell. Check trans oil for same. Check inside air filter area oil any oil colection. This should be bone dry. Roadtest for smooth trans operation and any engine vibrations. Listen for any thumping or banging over bumps and turns. Listen for any humming that may occur at hiway speeds. Check to see if car pulls one way or other on a flat road. Check braking for grinding, vibration or pulling on application. Check tires for any odd looking wear.ie outside edge cupping. Check park brake operation. If all seems satisfactory then would suggest engine compression test. Good luck Moe

Transfer case? Front diff? HELP!!

Sounds like a transfer case problem. But I can't verify that from here. Coupler is inside the unit on the output shaft and needs teardown to get to it.
