That code is for the fuel system the system performs a pressure test when the vehicle reaches a certain speed for a certain period of time, predetermined from the factory. The Gas cap is the most likely suspect. you see the vehicle will periodically pressurize the fuel system to check for leaks. If the cap is loose, the system can't pressurize the system and assumes there is a leak. tightening the cap is only one part of the answer. check to make sure the filler neck is not corroded, it it is plug the tank hole with a rag, note don't put it in all the way silly. use a brillo pad to clean any rust. then re-attach the cap. the light will go out on its own once the vehicle passes it's own tests 3 times. so give it a good drive up to 50mph or so for about 20 mins.this should turn the light off. if not it is probably something else and you should see your dealer. Troubleshooting code PO442 check engine light on. When I put in gas, gas nozzle keeps cutting off like tank is full

The code PO442 is a small leak somewhere in the evaporative emissions control system, the best way to find that is to take to a shop that does smoke tests for emissions.
As far as the nozzle, try changing the position of it the next time you get gas.

Trouble code po442

P0442 onepx.gif EVAP System Small Leak (0.040") Detected

EVAP fuel tank or canister vapor hoses leaking or damaged
EVAP system component leaking, damaged or has failed
Fuel tank cap is loose, or the cap release pressure is incorrect
Leak detection pump damaged or leaking

You can try the gas cap first, if that does not help you will need to take it to a repair shop, Small leaks are very hard to find. If you want to know what turns on the light here it is.

Cold engine startup (ECT sensor from 40-90F and within 10F of the BTS input at startup), fuel level more than 1/2 full, engine running, EVAP leak test "on", and the PCM detected a leak greater than 0.040 but less than 0.080" somewhere in the system.
This code sets in 2 Trip(s).

Diagnostic code PO442

PO442 is an Evaporation Emission leak. It's probably a loose gas cap. The fix would be $96.00 at our dealership, since your truck is out of warranty. You may be able to get it fixed cheaper, but you'll be charged a diagnostic fee.
