Question about 1986 Mitsubishi Montero

1 Answer

Engine needs priming every time I want to start it.

**** '86 Pajero turbo diesel (4D56 engine)****
Every time i want to start my engine (hot or cold) I need to prime the fuel system by using the primer plunger on top of the fuel filter. I also have to spray 'engine start' into my air cleaner. Once the engine starts it will run all day...until it is switched off! Now. for some reason my plunger is not working and sucks no diesel from the tank. . I have fitted a new fuel filter correctly and have no leaks that I can detect. Does this have an electric or mechanical lift pump?

heh, thanks for the rapid response. I have disconected the fuel line at the inlet side of the filter and cranked the engine and no diesel squirts out so i'm picking it is a dead/faulty pump. As far as I can see it appears to have an 'in tank' electric fuel pump. cheers

Actually a 1998. The car will start when it is cold but won't start when it is hot. The mechanic says he thinks we need to replace the electronic injector pump and then we "will see if that fixes it" as he actually has no idea what to do. I don't want to incur huge expenses if this is not he correct solution!!!

The right size sockets is about it. You will need to release the tension of the belt at the idler arm, disconnect your battery first, remove a couple of bolts and replace.

My pajero 2.8 turbo rattles when cold OK when hot

replace the injector tips as they are squirting and not atomising. They will also be dribbling and that is allowing fuel in before the injection time
