SOURCE: Drivers side blend door actuator not working

Hello: I have bad news for you, if you run the actuator without it connected to the door the actuator is ruined, it will have to be replaced. After replacement the system has to have the doors (actuators re-calibrated.) re-calibrated. This is done with a Tech 2, A GM special tool.

My heat went in my 2004 ford explorer...its blowing colding and there is a knocking noise

The knocking noise is the key. Assuming the coolant level is correct, and the thermostat is working correctly, it sounds like you have a blend door actuator concern. If the knocking noise is coming from the center dash area, the blend door needs to be replaced. The radio and center trim will need to be removed, the blend door removed and the blend door needs to be manually moved to verify heat. Good luck.

Heater is not working makes a ckicking noise when on hot stops when moved to cold

your blend door actuator is stripping it's gears. See if you can get to the actuator by following the noise. You may have to remove some panels. Remove the actuator from the heater box and try to rotate the blend door by hand. If the door is jammed, you will need to break it loose. You may have to remove the heater box to do this. Once unjammed, the actuator may work OK.
If the door rotates fine by hand, then replace the actuator. The part costs $40 at autozone and looks like the picture below. Let me know if you have more questions.jturcotte_48.jpg

Blend air door may be stuck. I removed a pencil from a heater box before. It had fallen from the dash, down through the defrost vents and jamed the door.
