This problem is only caused by one thing, a defective gas tank gauge sending unit, pull the gas tank and replace it, it is due to the chemicals added to the new clean burning gas, it destroys the older senders. The sender is only avail with the pump module, about $200 for the part, and 3 hours of labor, just did a 1999 last week for this same problem.

I replaced the fuel pump in my 2002 alero, the dash gauge now reads a 1/4 less than it should. How do I adjust it?

The float arm needs bending drop fuel tank divide number of gallons the tank will hold by 4 then by 2 this should be 1/8th of a tank approx. the red area of fuel gauge the fuel gauge arm is too short reading less fuel bend it down to raise float in fuel to read more gas. you can check before installing back into tank plug unit in and have some one watch gauge as you move arm slowly they should tell you where it is reading and you can tell by how much sweep the arm has. make small adjustment until satisfied.

Why is gas gauge not working correctly since fuelpump was replaced.

Is this a flex fuel vehicle. If so, call the dealership and ask the parts dept. if there is a gauge module (perhaps behind the instrument cluster). This may be the culprit and needs to be replaced.

My 2008 chevy malibu fuel gauge dose not read only some times when its a full tank the gauge is dead but about 1/4 tank it reads but gos in and out ?

this is caused by a defective gas gage sending unit, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump module inside the gas tank, the gas tank must be removed to replace the fuel pump module that also contains the sending unit.

What would cause a gas gauge to read one thing then read something else and move different times even after feeling the gas tank up .

Three possibilities...
1. Loose wire connection somewhere, probably the tank unit.
2. Faulty instrument panel voltage regulator.
3. Faulty gauge, either panel unit or tank unit.

Have a 2001 gmc jimmy...drove home gas gauge read 1/4 tank..next day cranked over but wont start..gas gauge reads empty...put $10.00 from spare gas can..cranked over but no start ..gas gauge still reads...

chevy and gmc trucks have an on going problem with this, turn the key on,and get a rubber mallot or a hammer and hit the bottom of the fuel tank a couple of times, this will unstick something in the fuel pump/sending unit.
