Question about 2005 Chevrolet Equinox
GM AC units are among the very best as far as reliability goes, so no it is not typical, what is it doing, does the compressor run?

I own two 2005 models.
The first time one A/C went out, I decided to change the compressor myself to save a few dealership bucks.
I was careful to remove the refrigerant slowly and [California] legally.
When I removed the compressor, there was no evidence of PAG oil in it. That lead to the premature failure.
Some time later, the second equinox compressor failed as well and it was devoid of PAG oil too.
GM must have had a hit and miss quality issue with the final stages of their compressor plant in Spain for '05. They were supposed to ship sealed with the correct amount of oil in them prior to attachment to the host engine.
I would not regard A/C repair as a typical user service item as it can be pretty dangerous without some training. There are toxic gasses under high pressure contained within the system.
If you have the compressor replaced, ensure it isn't installed dry and also make sure it is filled only to the required volume as stamped on the compressor case. Too much PAG oil is bad too.
Finally, it's always a good idea to change the Dryer / Accumulator at the same time, its filter may be clogged with shavings from the dead compressor.
Best of luck
