Fuel gage not working

Fuel gauge problems are commonly the result of faulty electrical grounding at the tank or a problem with the sending unit inside the tank but can also be caused by faulty wiring or a bad fuse.

My gas gauge stopped working, says it's full,I go to put gas in it and can't get gas into tank ,it wants to come out,but knowing it's empty, was wandering if it needs a new sensor?

Putting gas has nothing to do with you fuel gauge problem
Must problems to add fuel and comes out can be cause by air flow in the tank, also it is recommended to fuel with the engine turn off so the pressure from fuel pump going back to the tank will not affect the fueling , about you fuel gauge not working properly can be cause by a electrical problem such wiring or defective gauge or can be fuel sender problem with most the time it is install on fuel pump assy.

My gas gauge hasnt been working for a long time and im tired of keeping up with the mileage everytime i fill up. so now i want to fix it, what is the most common reason it stops working? is it the float or...

FUEL SENDING UNIT IN THE FUEL TANK FAULTY.THE FLOAT ARM ATTACH TO SENDING UNIT.THE FUEL SENDING IS A RHEOSTAT WITH ELECTRICAL CURRENT FLOWING TO IT.YOU HAVE A COIL OF RESISTANCE WIRE IN RHEOSTAT.WHEN FLOAT+ ARM RISE WHEN PUMPING MORE FUEL IN TANK THIS CAUSE MORE CURRENT FLOW THROUGH COIL FROM RHEOSTAT TO FUEL GAUGE WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE MOVE TO FULL MARK.WHEN FUEL LEVEL DROP THE FLOAT + ARM DROP CAUSE LOW CURRENT THROUGH RHEOSTAT COIL WIRE IN WHICH CAUSE FUEL GAUGE NEEDLE TO DROP SHOWING LOW FUEL LEVEL IN THE FUEL TANK.

Common problems on the 03-06 Impala instrument clusters, it's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board and it can be repaired. Check out this page for more on how to get it fixed - Impala instrument cluster fix

Gas gauge reads full when underway. However, when

Most likely it a bad fuel level sensor on you fuel pump. You will have to replace the fuel pump as that is the only way to replace the sensor for you fuel gauge. The sensor is built into the fuel pump. The contacts on the sensor become corroded over time and cause the sensor to malfunction causing your fuel gauge to read full all the time. I have a 2001 Montana extended version that had the same problem. In order to know when I needed to fill the tank, I would completely fill it each time I put fuel in and reset my trip odometer. I would go 400 miles on the tank before I would refuel until we were able to replace the fuel pump.

1995 Honda Civic fuel gauge always shows full. I removed instrument cluster and moved gauge down by hand. The needle moves back to full when key is switched to acc position. I found no loose wires or bad...

Well, theres a sending unit/float in the tank that sends a signal thru wires to your instrument cluster's fuel gauge. You should have an auto electric repairperson determine where your problem lies. It's not often the needle's just 'stuck' to where you could dislodge it. More often, it's pegged overfull or underempty-signaling a shorted component upstream of the gauge.

Similar problem and found the solution:
In the back of the gauge, where the 2 coils are located, there are very tiny copper wires which connect all the resistors/diodes. they each travel from within the coil and are soldered to 3 out of the 4 mounting pins. if any of these wires are shorting out or disconnected, the gauge will malfunction.

- take the gauge and flip upside down
- temp gauge has 1 resistor (blue) and 1 diode (copper)
- fuel gauge has 2 resistors, no diodes
- 1 wire should be attached to bottom mounting pin (letter E for EMPTY)
- 1 wire should be attached to pin holding both resistors (half tank)
- 1 wire should be attached to the stand-alone ground pin (no mounting bracket)

Hope that helps!

Faulty fuel gauge

i'd suspect a bad ground in that circuit.
