SOURCE: What are the usual labor and part costs for a 1988

Lifters are generally under $10. each. Labor depends entirely upon what the shop normally gets per hour. Hours depend upon which engine you have. (same for gasket kit)

Hi looks like your head gasket is gone, check if oil in water or water in oil, oil will go grey in colour, and open rad, when cold, check for signs of oil. But not good symptoms, sorry!

If timing in a 1988 Chevy nova is not correct will this contribute to engine overheating

It could, but only under certain conditions, such as climbing a steep mountain.
The engine would also have very little power.
An exhaust restriction could also cause both symptoms.

1988 Chevy Nova started running real bad and

It really depends on what you have under the hood. And how many miles it has on it, I have an 88 transam, it has 250,000 miles on it . Still will do donuts in the parking lot. everything is original. Taken care of. But it is old and tired. Rebuilding it soon. Repost with TBI,TPI , or carb..All these make a difference. besides your engine is just worn out.

I need to replace the fuel filter on my 1988 chevy nova, not sure where it is located. If anyone could describe where and how to do this I would appreciate it. Also pictures would be greately...

On the SOHC engine it is located between the engine and driver's side shock tower. Look for a clear looking canister in that area. It's very simple to change.

On the DOHC engine it is located in near the fuel tank.
