Belt too tight or too loose can cause this. Also make sure the hydraulic fluid is well topped up and there is no airlock in the system.

However if you mean the pump squeals when you turn to the very end of the stop on the lock and then hold it there this is can be normal behaviour for some pumps. It is not advisable to do this unless you are bleeding air out of the system as it puts a lot of pressure on the pump and can cause damage to it.

To eliminate air from the system as a possible cause. First remove the cap from the hydraulic header tank. Then move the steering to full lock on the left, repeat to full lock on the right and continue this procedure 10 times in total. Please note that this procedure works best with the car jacked up to eliminate the weight factor of the wheels. Make sure car is securely supported when both wheels are lifted off the ground of course. Check and top up fluid as necessary.

Finally you might want to try a power steering conditioner such as Wynes or Stopleak by STP. These can work wonders in quieting a power steering system down.

Steering wheel squeeks when turning either direction.

A squeak or a whining noise? If it is a squeak then it is something mechanical from your steering column down. Could be anything from rack and pinion to the tie rods and ball joints. If it is a whining noise the you need to check your power steering fluid and power steering pump. If the fluid is low then you have a leak in the power steering system somewhere and needs to be fixed before you ruin the pump.

Steering wheel locks up while driving

If the power steering pump were going bad you'd get a whining noise when turning at slow speeds. You'll also find it hard to turn the wheel. A slipping belt will give you the same indications. Now if the lock pin is engaging the lock plate while you're in motion that would indicate a loose pin.

There is a squealing noise when I turn the steering wheel.

Possible solution may be a new serpentine belt. When you turn the steering wheel it is an added torque/tension against the belt from the power steering drive pulley. A worn and dry belt may tend to squeal as the extra grip on that pulley is applied. You would have to pinpoint just where the squeal is coming from to be sure the power steering pump is the origin of the noise. There may also be other reasons if its due to a worn out belt, idler and tensioner pulley's could be making noise as well.

2002 hyunda elantra gls power steering pulley sticks and squeals. belts were recently replaced and are tight..fluid level is normal and there are no visible leaks.

dear friend-if you remove the belt and turn the pump and it does not stick then the pulley is worn out causing the belt to slip.

Elantra Steering Wheel Noise

Check and make sure that your power steering fluid is topped off. Could possibly problems with your power steering pump. Mine does the same and the fluid is full. I just keep an eye/ear on it. If it continues to get worse than it could be the pump going out. If the fluid is allowed to get too low, it could possibly get air in it affecting both the "feel" of the steering and making a noise.
