Question about Pontiac Sunfire

Open Question

What would cause a 2000 sunfire to misfiring and chug?

I have a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire that I just replaced the head gasket and some hoses on about 2 months ago. A week after that the muffler got really loud and the car was hesitant to go. After fixing the muffler problem, it began to miss. That being said, we tested the cylinders and the 3rd was not working. Before I go and buy spark plugs and wires I would just like to know if this could be the only problem? What else could cause the car to run like this?

SOURCE: Misfire

Check to make sure the fuel injector is working on that cylinder, check the connector to the injector for a loose or damaged pin, get a NOID tester from a parts store and see if the injector flashes the NOID light while the engine is running or cranking.

SOURCE: I replaced the head gasket on my 97 Sunfire it doesn't start

If your timing is off you will have no power.check and make sure all timing mark's are correct. Some engine's are contact motor's,which mean's if your timing is off you could cause damage to valve's or piston's.Also you should do a compression test to be sure each cylinder has adequite pressure.Hope this help's.

the round oval shaped object in question should be the canister where your oil filter goes ,yes there is a gasket on the inside that may have been broke or left off on your last oil change

Check your alternator see if you have a drop in voltage on your tack, then it is the problem.I too was a victim of high price tune up and still had a problem with a misfire.and cover your coil pack with a piece of rubber water run of onto your power pack .Another thing is to use a silicone spray on all wires.

2000 pontiac sunfire replaced head gasket now it still wont start, it just backfires

It sounds like a timing issue. Make sure the cam shafts and timing belt are installed correctly. Hopefully you have not belt any valves while trying to start it. Good luck.

1997 2,4 sunfire cylinders 2 3 misfire. coil has been replaced, plugs & fuel pressure are good, and cad converter has been dropped..was melted almost shut but now fixed. what do i check now?

I would suspect a head gasket or head problem.. the catalytic converter being plugged causes heat build up in the engine and overheating in the engine can cause failure of the head hasket or head itself. The reason your cylinders are misfiring could be water leaking from a water port in the head and into the cylinder which would cause the cylinder not to fire..there might be some steamy vapor coming coming out of the exhaust if that is happening

Were is the thermostat located in a Pontiac Sunfire 2000?

Hi:
Your thermostat is located under the thermostat housing, which is what the upper radiator hose clamps to on the top of your engine. Basically, you need to start with a cold engine, drain your radiator, then unclamp the upper radiator hose from the engine. Remove the bolts from the thermostat housing, and gently tap on it to remove it. clean up the mounting surfaces on both the engine and the housing, and install a new thermostat, and new gasket. tighten to proper torque, reconnect the radiator hose, then refill up the radiator and cooling system.

What can cause overheating in a 2000 pontiac sunfire

Replace the thermostat. It will be fine after that. I know thats what everyone says anytime there is an overheating problem but in this case with the way the system works and it has been working fine up to this point, it's gonna be the thermostat.

YOU COULD HAVE A DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP OR THERMOSTAT ALSO RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE YOUR WATER PUMP IS BEING TURNED BY DRIVE BELT.NOT SLIPPING.MAKE SURE COOLANT SYSTEM HAS BEEN BLED AND YOU HAVE HALF ANTIFREEZE HALF WATER.CHECK YOUR CRANKCASE WHEN CAR COOLS DOWN.IF OIL STILL LOOK LIKE MILK SHAKE.YOUR NEW HEAD GASKETS LEAKING.THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED HEAD GASKET DIDNT DECK THE HEADS.THEY PROBABLY NEED SHAVED A LITTLE SO HEAD GASKET WILL SEAL.

My girlfriends 2000 pontiac sunfire's compression test(passenger side cylinder to drivers side) came out 100-80-100-80psi, not sure how to name the cylinders but is that normal or is the head gasket blown...

well a 100 is about minimum and 80 is no good! so you have two bad holes and that would make the car misfire and be hard to start! there is diffidently an issue internally! a head gasket is a cause for sure! could be other stuff too like piston rings and vales but more commonly head gaskets. good luck!

2000 pontiac sunfire misfire

Solution is in the wiring harness....these cars are noted for this as it runs under the rad exposing it to the elements and corrosion. You will need a dealer with the proper scanner to read the code & find the wire.
