Posibly he has a vaccum leak and somesome saw the o2 rading or the fuel trims. can you hear hissing sounds from the engine area when it's running? on the back of the intake manifold there is a hose that gets soaked with oil and leaks. you may have more than one problem. the IAC valve which is on top of the throttle body may be deffective.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1997 lumina with 3.1L. the problem started with loss of power under load and p0300 code. check coils and vacuum leaks both OK.change spark plugs and wires.[same problem] check compression OK.

Since you changed the sensor we will assume it is working. When you disconnect it you put the computer in limp mode which stops it from using sensor values. If code 300 is the only code we will assume the coolant temp sensor and others are ok.
I would check fuel pressure with a gauge next.

looks like not enough fuel pressure, check the fuel filter.
and the fuel pump pressure.with car running 60 psi
the pump is located at the rear seat driver side you have to remove the carpet to access the cover. if the fuel pressure checked "OK" suspect defective maf sensor (sometimes defective maf sensor do not show errors codes)another way to test is disconecting the maf sensor and start the car (computer goes to limp in mode) and works little better,or check by scanner idle= low grams per seconds and increase when accelerate.

They said it was on o2 cencer now they say its the fuel filter!!!

Could be a couple of things. The sensors are a pain to troubleshoot. MAS/MAP or IAT sensor is a problem one also...it is the cheapest of the sensor.

Idles okay, runs rough when gas applied

Either a bad MAP sensor, or TPS. What is the code for the check engine light? This will most likely tell you what it is.
