It's not a big job, I would estimate maybe $100. Could be done in 2 hours I figure. I have owned a Mits Mighty max 2.0 for 30 years and that's my best guess. Don't have a shop jerk you around.

SOURCE: crankshaft bolt came off Montero sport.

Hey dave,

I just read this evening about a recall dealing with that very thing. Here is a description taken from intellichoice.com

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE Manufacturer Recall Number00V311001
Model AffectedMONTERO SPORT
Units Affected210,000
DefectVEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES: MIRAGE MODEL VEHICLESEQUIPPED WITH 1.5L ENGINES; MONTERO SPORT MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 3.0LENGINES; AND MONTERO MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 3.0L ENGINES. THE BOLTSECURING THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY CAN BECOME LOOSE AND THE PULLEY COULDFALL OFF THE VEHICLE.
ConsequencesTHE CONDITION CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Corrective ActionON THE MIRAGE VEHICLES, THE DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW, IMPROVEDCRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT ON THE OLDER ENGINES. ON NEW ENGINES WHICHALREADY HAVE THE IMPROVED BOLT, THE DEALER WILL TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFTPULLEY BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUE SPECIFICATION. ON THE MONTERO MODELS,DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUESPECIFICATIONS. IF THE BOLT IS DAMAGED, IT WILL BE REPLACED.
NotesOWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT THE MANUFACTURER.

That being said, there is no reason the dealer should have needed to fiddle with the crank pulley to do the cam plug seals. I have to replace mine also, and from all the info I have read to prepair for it, its rather straight forword and simple to do as attested by this answer to FAQ's from this page about 3/4 the way near the bottom:

http://msport97.proboards6.com/index.cgi?board=faq&action=display&n=1&thread=6258&page=1#1069097737

Since you have had the truck since new, do you recall having this recall service performed? If it wasn't, hey, you might have a strong case to have Mitsubishi pick up the tab for repairs. It may even be possiblewell that the tech attempted to perform the recall and screwed up. In any case, I would be doing some Googling into this known issue, starting' with the Mitsubishi Montero Sport forum FAQ's referenced in the above link, and this owners forum as well:

www.mitsubishiforum.com

Both have a great wealth of info about our babys. Hope my long rambling helps in some way. God bless, and good luck with your issue.

2001 montero sport xls sport horn on my alarm how do i stop it i pulled the fuse but it is still goint

You need to determine if it's the horn or the alarm. My Montero (not Sport) had 3 horns. All 3 of which go off w/ the Alarm, but only one is connected to the horn on the steering wheel. I could not make mine go off w/o pulling the relay under the hood.

My spring was bad in the steering wheel. I was able to bypass the wire using instructions that I actually found on a Mitsubishi Forum. Link below:

I just replaced a leaking transmission seal on my 2001 Mitsubishi Montero sport put transmission back. Now truck will not move! Any suggestions?

if its an automatic, go through the gears a few times, while its running and you have the E brake on,, you probably have air in the lines, go from Park all the way down to Low, and back,, feeling for the selected gears to pop in place

Does my 2001 mitsubishi montero sports 3.5v6 needs timing belt replacement?

t belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles,if your montero has 120,000 miles or more,I recommend replacing the tensioner also, remember that you have to remove all of the front of engine cover,so it would be a good time to maybe replaced the engine seals and drive belts since everything is taken off at this time
