Have you checked the transmission fluid level? If it is good, then it could be a problem in the valve body, a busted internal seal, or or your drive clutches are going bad.

Sounds like you need a new transmission or at least a new gear.

Transmission slipping

sounds like your trans. is going out try using a transmission fluid additive called LUCAS STOP SLIP it will temporarily fix it for smooth driving although some people have reported their slipping permanently stop.

Slips in drive from a stop,. but is fine in all other gears if you take off in 2 then shift into drive it doesnt slip in drive.

You've got a clutch going out in the trans. will need to have it checked by trans shop. The reason it doesnt slip when in 2 is you are skipping 1st

My 1998 Chevrolet Malibu will not go into drive possibly due to the transmission overheating. Once the engine cools down, I am able to put into drive. Also the gears tend to slip.

Likely you are looking at this backwards. Slipping causes a ton of heat. Slipping is caused by worn seals inside the transmission that allow pressure loss and partial application of drive clutches which then slip. Only way to fix this is a rebuild. I know this is not what you wanted to hear but that's just the way it works!!!

Check to make sure you are not low on ATF, otherwise you might need bands adjusted by transmission tech.
