Automatic trannys can be a pain in the buttocks... there are quite a few things that can cause this problem. It can just be a faulty sensor on the engine that causes this, as when the engine is cold, it will ignore some of the sensors since they haven't heated up and can't give a viable reading if they are cold. So if there is a check engine light on, try and get the codes out to figure out if it has to do with a speed sensor, or airflow sensor, or TPS sensor, and such. The problem can also just be the trans oil level, as the thickness changes when hot, and in most cases the level needs to be checked when hot and can cause confusion as to having the right amount in there. Could be the torque converter being worn out and having problems getting pressure up when the oil is hot since it becomes more liquid. Could also be a faulty solenoid in the tranny that has too high of a resistance when it gets heated up also. And could also be a bad ground due to a crack in the frame or body that opens up when the metal gets warm and warps a bit. So like i said, this kind of transmission problem can be a major pain as it can be so many things, but the first place to start would be to check if there are any codes in the computer of something being defective, as this is the fastest and less costly thing to check, and always a good starting point for most problems. Other than that i can't help you much without having my hands on the truck, so i hope this at least helped you out a little, and if you have more info after some testing, just write back and i'll be glad to hlep out as much as i can. :)

I would change tranny fluid & filter & gasket.
Also make sure the tranny lines & tranny cooler are not clogged.
Make sure there are no leaks & all connections are secure.
If this doesn't help then you probably have a sequenizer gear that is shot which will call for a tranny rebuild. Make sure U use the manufactorer's tranny fluid.
Hope this helps.

When is the last time you changed the fluid? I think your truck come stock with a trans cooler might want to do a trans flush a jiffy lube it is a hundred dollars the cooler might be stopped up the cost to remove and rebuild 2500 if you remove it you get lucky 5 to 7 hundred then you need to put the trans back in your self. the owners manual will tell you to change about every 30,000 to 50,000 miles

SOURCE: overdrive light started flashing

the OD light is flashing to let u know a fault has occurred in the transmission electronic controls or that it is slipping plus other issues, go to Kragen or Autozone and ask them to run a trouble code test, it is free, post the code back here for me to look at.

the solenoids in the trans may be sticking, try adding 1 pint of dot 3 brake fluid to the transmission fluid and drive it for a while-give it a chance to work..the brake fluid acts like a cleaner and it makes worn seals and clutches swell a little.just drive it easy for about 20-30 miles, its only about $3.00 and it could save a $1,600.00 rebuild

Solenoid pack in trans. Position module,is just that. Wrong guess. What tran model do you have? You also have other sensors to consider but have to know the trans your working on and the computer and shift stratagy involved to solve this, even if your throwing parts at it.

overdrive is the fourth gear.D1,D2,D3,D4 now drive truck at 80 kmh
cruise at steady speed no fuel pedal movement, downshift from D4 to D3 you should feel RPM raise .. after push brake pedal a little you should see RPM raise 300 to 400 rpm.
shift pattern is 1st gear ,second gear,3rd gear and lock up(torque converter clutch). 4th gear with lock up
hope it helps

You can put the shifter in 2, 3, or overdrive. It will still start in first and shift up to whatever gear you have selected. Try it, you wont damage anythingl

not sure if it will make much difference but there are sensors on the trans that can be bad and you really have no way to tell it. or a wheel speed sensor or could even be a dirty clogged trans filter but I am leaning more towards the sensors. I can bet when they rebuilt the trans they just reused the same sensors and thats why you still have the same problem

I have a 1999 Tiburon. Trans starts off in 2nd gear and goes to 3rd but will not go into overdrive. When starting cold though, it will shift 1,2&3. Also overdrive(4th gear) light will not come on.

I would check into the Trans oil temp sensor, they are known to keep the trans from shifting into 4th gear if they have a open or a shorted circuit...This may also be the culprit for the other issues you are experiencing when the trans is at diff temps and doing diff things....The other thing that is known for going bad in that Transaxle is the Sunshell...The splines on the inside of the sunshell strip out and than you will lose pretty much all forward gears,Except for 1st gear most likely and you will also lose Reverse if the Sunshell goes bad...But this will not act any different if the temperature is cold or hot

It's actually your transmission fluid getting hot! Check trans. cooling lines going to radiator or aux.trans.cooler. Check fluid on dipstick with engine running, if you fluid is burnt looking not bright red anymore. Have your fliud flushed-changed and have service tech flush lines through radiator. You may solve problem this easy, but worse case senerio if it has done this for awhile you may need to rebuild trans. and get new cooling lines. My chrysler did the same thing but it cost me $1450.00 for the rebuilt trans.. After my trans. was rebuilt by the 35 years experianced shop,I found that the cooling lines were clogged and it burntout there fresh rebuild. The warranty I got paid for the second go around rebuilding trans.again. That company had to eat the costs. Now everything shifts great! Drove it on vacation! Make sure if you get trans. rebuilt they replace the governor sensor and solenoid sensor if your trans. is electronic like my 95 is.

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in

heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself

to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

Automatic gears

Honda transmissions,as well as most other overdrive transmissions, should be driven at all times in drive 4,or the overdrive position, with the exception of severe driving conditions, such as towing a load, extremely hilly terrain,or long uphill grades, the trans should be taken out of overdrive, and placed in the drive 3 position. This is to prevent the perpetual shifting back and forth of the trans from 3rd into 4th,back to 3rd,back to 4th,back to 3rd,that would eventually damage both the 3rd and 4th gear clutch discs and components.
