Reverse for 20-30 yards on a smooth surface and in a straight line should disengage it.

You will have to remove the shift motor from the transfere case and rotate the selector shaft manually.
You probably need a mechanic to do this.

Place transmission in neutral, keep foot on the brake. Turn vehicle off, now try to shift from 4WD Low to 2 WD High. If it goes in you will feel it slip in and double check to make sure. Restart vehicle and try to put it in drive, if it worked the 4WD light should go out and it should drive normal ---- all else fails read owners manual to make sure your doing it right.

Some times the drive train binds up and won't release straight away. The way to overcome this is to select 2 high and put the car in reverse. Give the accelerator a little jab and that will take the load off and the front hubs will disengage. The light on the dash should go out, if so then all good. :)

SOURCE: stuck in 4x4 low range

My wife just recently had a similar problem. She got stuck in the mud and put our 2004 F150 in 4x4 Low to get out. She didn't. Had to have AAA pull her out. She then left a bit later and the truck was still in 4x4 Low even after switching to 2WD. She even tried going backwards to get it to switch. So she called me frantically because the car would not go over 10 mph w/o the RPMs getting way too high. I said I'd call her back. So I called our local Ford Repair shop and he gave me these instructions (loosely based on what the owner's manual says to do) 1. Start Vehicle 2. Switch to 4x4 Low 3. Put in Neutral 4. Switch to 4x4 High 5. Go in Reverse for a bit and then Forward a bit again (You should now be in 4x4 High) 6. Put in Neutral 7. Switch to 2WD You should now be good. If that didn't work, then try repeating step 5 after step 7. Which reminds me. I really should call her back :) (It worked)

SOURCE: wont disengage out of 4 wheel drive 1998 ford

Be sure to put the truck in neutral, while engine is running, while you disengage from 4 wheel drive (low) to 4 wheel drive (high) and then finally to 2 wheel drive. It is critical to shift transmission into neutral when switching out of 4WD Low, as indicated in your owner's manual. Hopefully, this will help to FixYa problem!

How do I know if its the 4w actuator causing my problem

If you can jack up the car off the ground and start it and put in drive if the front wheels are turning and you have the lever in 2 wheel drive then yes it's stuck, check the vacumn lines that run to front wheels to see if they have cracked or fallen off. This model is vacumn operated so follow lines under hood and check them all

96 explorer disengages 4wh low but does not engage 2wheel

Does it shift to 4wd high range ? If so then shift to 2wd . What is going on here is the transfer case motor is stopping due to the motor position sensor has gone bad which means that you replace the transfer case motor assembly. But if you wish to make it a 2wd for awhile then remove motor and manually turn shaft . This can be done by raising and supporting rear axle truck in park remove motor turn shaft slowly with pliers and rotating the play in drive shaft. There are stamped markings on back of case showing gear positions..

4 wheel drive lights flashes but then returns to 2wheel drive -- some time it will lock in 4w low but both 4w hi and 4w low lights are on --- have new tccm module.

It is the shift motor for the 4wheel drive - only problem is that a shop has to program the new shift motor to the blazer or it will keep doing the same thing

Manual Transmission seems to be stuck in low range. Transfer case in 2wd high range, however when transmission is shifted to 5th gear still only going 25 mph at 4000pm. Clutch seems to be engaging and...

The transfer case is stuck in the low range. If manual shift try shifting from low to high several times to see if free up. If electronic, check all fuses and make sure you hear transfer case change range. Do this by shifting with key on engine off. If no change refer to qualified transmission mechanic.

I have a 1992 Ford Bronco and it began to hesitate tonight while driving. I put the gear in low and now I dont know how to get the truck back into the correct gear. Im not familiar with the floor gears

look at the driver side visor the shift pattern is printed there. it should be also on the shift lever itself . I think 2 wheel high is all the way forward then back 1 is neutral back 1 more is 4w low and all the way back is 4w high

Ok i have a 1999 ford ex and i got a new battry for it and look at some fuse but now the 4x4 light is on on my dashbord and when i swick it two 4w it drive bad and truns left real slow some on help

If the 4wd light is not flashing, then it is likely it stuck in 4wd (possbily on accident?). The slow turning and bad driving indicates that it may be in 4wd Low. They only way to take it out of 4wd Low is to put the truck in nuetral and with your foot on the brake, switch the dial (or floor lever) to 2wd. The light should go out almost immediately. Then put the shifter in drive from nuetral and drive at least 15 feet forward. That will disengage the front hubs and you should be all set.

Hope this helps.

Trnsfer case wont engage

This vehicle has a solenoid on the front differetial that switches between 2W and 4W drive. The mechanism also contains a swtich that tells the truck what position it is in. Your problem may be a faulty solenoid. It is relatively easy to replace.
