Often they just wear out or the internal regulator goes out. Most auto parts stores with test them, or you charging system, for you , for free.

Overchanging alternater (ECU?)

The ECU has no control on the voltage. Does your vehicle have a separate voltage regulator? If so that's your fault. A lot of alternators have the regulator built into them. The alternator needs to be put on a test rig away from the vehicle and the output tested, this will eliminate the vehicle, You could disconnect the wiring to the alternator, run three fly leads to the alternator and to a separate battery and run the engine and test the voltage on the spare battery. Wire 1: Battery neg to case of alternator Wire 2: Battery pos to + terminal on alt (the thick wire) Wire 3: Battery pos through a 5 watt bulb to the ind terminal (ignition light) 17 volt will blow another battery for sure.

1994 E150 van ford no alt power have changed the alt. charged the batt

There is a fuse or fuseable link between the alt and battery, and the alt gets a signal from the key to activate the voltage regulator.
I would check for batt voltage at the alternator and you may need a wiring diagram to check for key voltage.

2002 kia Rio Altenator not chargeing ( alt light not showing discharge ) Changed alt, Check out put with volt meter still putting out only 12.2 should be 13.8 Alt checked out OK on bench...

Hi, the actual output voltage produced by the alternator will vary depending on temperature and load, but will typically be about 1-1/2 to 2 volts higher than battery voltage. At idle, most charging systems will produce 13.8 to 15.3 volts with no lights or accessories on. This can be measured by connecting the positive (+) and negative (-) test leads of a voltmeter to the battery posts while the engine is running.

Possible cause of the alternator not charging includes Slipping or broken alternator belt, Open diode, Open circuit in stator windings, Open charging circuit, Open field circuit, Worn brushes or slip ring and Defective voltage regulator..

Battery not charging, alternator seem to putting

11.50 volts won't be enough potential to overcome the batteries 12 volt standing charge.

Either your alternator is shot...which you can check by going to an Autozone and having a free system check. Or your battery is already going bad and not sending enough voltage to the alternator to make the 13.8-15.8 volts it should be making.

If the alternator is the culprit a good mechanic will swap it out for a fairly low price and save you a lot of headaches.

Good luck and be careful.

Thismorning lights and blower flashed battery light came on voltage dropped to low. batt.light still on truck is starting and running fine.i put a voltage meter on batt.---reads 12.9--11.0. top bolt on...

Sounds like you may need an alternator.
If the batt is ok, could be the alt going out.
A local pep boys or equivalent can check free or inexpensively...
The voltage regulator is built in to the alternator... so if you change the alternator, you change the regulator too.

What will cause a 1999 dodge diesel not to charge?? I have put new alt. on it and checked everything i know to check

How old are your batteries ? Diesels take a lot of juice to turn them over, I had a similar problem once, turned out to be the positive cable leading between the batteries.I would get a diagnostic on it to confirm your problem, could just be something simple.

Alternator keeps blowing out

The only thing that controls the alt. is the alt itself. It has an internal regulator that controls the output voltage. I am not sure when you say the alt "shorts out" Need more info. Moe

This 03 mazda tribute has just recently started to burn up voltage regulators in the altinator. I have put 3 alt.'s on this already and it now looks like I'll need to do a forth!! 1st time in: AVR...

I have had a string of bad alternators through my shop lately all made by USA alternator. I would breakdown and get an OEM part in this case. I would also bench test alternator prior to installation
