At a guess here I would say that you are up for a new clutch kit. Test it by engaging 1st gear with the engine off--depress the clutch--start engine ---let out the clutch. If it just makes the noise and smells then it will be a clutch kit job.

Sounds and smells like you need a new clutch.
On some cars, you can adjust the cable to get enough life to save and plan for it.

You might want to also check your fluid level, these cars are known to leak at the seals and contaminate the fluid. You will likely need to replace the slave cyl as well.

Do you have a check engine light? You may have a bad EGR valve or maybe a vacuum leak? Are you smelling any odors, like rotten eggs?

Car won't into gear

If it is a automatic it may be low on transmission fluid. If fluid is full smell it if it smells burnt you need a transmission rebuild. If stick shift you may need clutch adjusted or have broken synchronizers.

My transmission in my 1996 Chevy 4x4 k2500 jerks real.bad when shifting into 2nd gear and as the engine heats up it won't shift at all?????PLEASE HELP!!!!

Automatic or standard transmision. If it is a automatic check the dip stick and see if the oil is red or black, and if it smells burnt or not. If it is black and smells burnt, you need to overhaul your transmission, which is not unlikell for a 4x4. If it is a std you are still on the verge of needing a new clutch.

Burnt rubber smell when backing up

Sounds like your rear brakes aren't releasing quick enough, and the burnt smell of rubber would be your rear tires almost skidding on the ground without making the screeching sound.

Used to get an average of about 6.5 L/100km in our 4cyl '03 Accent, now getting ~9. The only thing I've noticed is that it seems to be shifting gears at a higher rpm than it used to (no noticeable leaks)....

check your fluid, looking for odd materials in it, smelling for a burnt smell, as well as running some OBD2 tests at your local autoparts store (generally free), that should tell you if the computer is aware of any malfuctions, also, the clutches in the transmission could be wearing down, although that seems like an unlikely problem, transmissions fluid flush could cure the issue, but is more expensive than a free test

My 99 ford contour won,tgo into high gear, overdrive. shifts ok most ot the time except for high gear.

I would service the transmission before assuming anything is wrong or broke have it flushed and have a new filter and fluid put in.. Then go from there.

Why does my 2002 nissan altioma give me a burnt egg smell when i accelerate on the highway?

usually ,when using the egg discription it referred to as a rotten egg smell ,not burnt.. if this is the case you may have a catalytic converter that is in need of replacement..

Slow pick-up, high rpm

It seems as though the Transmission clutches are slipping if it's an automatic or the clutch is worn if it's a standard. If it's an automatic transmission check the Transmission oil it should be clean and no burnt smell. You will easily recognize burnt oil by it's nasty smell.
