On 97 z71 Tahoe will ignition switch make transfer case try to engage with key off

Dose your vehicle have the electronic shift for the transfer case.
If so the TCCM transfer case control module . Could cause this however there is about 40 pages in the manual about what could be wrong with it .
Mine has a shift lever on the floor and I have to tweek it all the time to make it work..
In short you need someone who spificly works on this system its complex but probblely he would know right away what to replace to correct it

How do you unlock 4 wheel drive? It seems to be stuck in low.

You need to check to see if the transfer case shift motor is getting signal. Easiest way is with a decent scan tool. If the lights light up on the switch then the system is powered if not check fuses. Check for codes in the TCCM.

2005 Tahoe 4wd service light on and wont change into anything but 2hi

You need to get the codes in the TCCM checked - it has a likely c0327 current - if that is set it will likely need a encoder motor (the part that shifts the transfer case into 4 or 2 wheel drive)

2-04-21-006E: Inoperative 4WD/AWD Lamps, Inoperative 4WD/AWD System, DTC C0550 Set No Communication with TCCM (Reprogram Transfer Case Control Module) - (Jul 20, 2006)

This bulletin is being revised to add Subject information and change the labor operation. This bulletin cancels and supersedes Bulletin Number 03-04-21-006. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Numbers 02-04-21-006D and 03-04-21-006 (Section 04 -- Driveline/Axle).
ConditionSome customers may comment that the 4WD/AWD indicator lights on the selector switch do not work, or the 4WD/AWD system may be inoperative and/or the service 4WD light is illuminated. The condition is typically intermittent and always occurs at key-up. Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC C0550 set.
CauseThe Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) has not received the wake-up call during key-up and has remained in the "sleep mode".
When the TCCM is in the "sleep mode", it will not communicate with the class II bus or the Tech 2®.
Correction
  1. Try to communicate with the TCCM. If no communication, go to step 2. If communication is possible, go to step 5.
  2. Remove the underhood (ATCM or TREC) TCCM fuse.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Reinstall the fuse. The module should "wake up" and communicate with the Tech 2®.
  5. Check for codes in the TCCM. If a C0550 is found current or in history with or without other codes, replace the module and go to step 6.
  6. Reprogram the TCCM with the latest TIS software using normal SPS procedures.
  7. Verify operation and that no codes are present.
Important: For the 2002 model year, the TCCM must be replaced and reprogrammed.

Service 4x4 light came on now 4x4 doesnot work

Check the 4WD fuse in the drivers door pillar fuse panel. If blown most likely shorted front axle actuator. If OK would suspect the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) It has many updates for that year and were known for failing or shifting modes all by themselves.

About a week ago i was driving my 2003 Tahoe and it was in auto, hit a patch of ice and that 4 wheel drive slipped and then said to service my 4 wheel drive. I went home turned it off and then back on...

There are very suspect to the TCCM (transfer case control module) more so when they have the auto function. There are a few calibration updates for the TCCM, but don't usually result in the vehicle going into neutral. I would suggest you get it scanned for TCCM codes, if there are any ECU failures relating to the TCCM, it needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.

99 tahoe stuck in 4 low. it went to 4 low by itself. tccm makes a cliking sound when truck is started.

The 4 wheel drive system has 3 main parts. The switch on the dash, the encoder motor which is on the transfer case, and the TCCM or transfer case control module. If you keep it simple, the only one of these parts that can make the transfer case do something by it's self is the TCCM. However, the most replaced part at my shop is the encoder motor.
Have someone do a diagnostic check and see what codes are present. If it is a C0327 DTC, it is the encoder motor circuit malfunction. If a C0374 code is present, it's the TCCM.
