Common exhaust manifold cracking probably. It was for me anyway and I hear it's common on the 4.0L

Runs great but will quit running , smell gas also

Sound like a rich by a long way; are you check if have smoke in exhaust? Black smoke is fuel, blue smoke is oil.

Also, your injectors are to big and is running rich.

fuel pressure seems a bit high...could be a bad regulator. can't remember if yours is on top of the sending unit (on tank) or on the fuel rail though. Do more testing there.

My jeep smokes badly. Black smoke in 2nd and 3rd gear...Why?

if its not an oil issue its will be a over fuel issue. Your running rich. It could be a bad fuel pump or pressure regulator. It could be a bad 02 sensor. It could be a altitude sensor like the MAP sensor Get it fixed because right now your toasting the catalytic converter and will set a code for a bad cat when it deteriorates enough

98 jeep grand cherokee black smoke

Either your too rich and gas is getting by the piston rings going into the crankcase(oil pan)or you have a defective fuel pump (even if it is new!!)IT'S one or the other!!Running the car very rich for a period of time will have fuel in the oil!! I run mind rich for the nos and smell gas in the oil when draining it and only have a few passes on the motor with the nitrous, but runs extremely rich at idle because the timing is backed way down and running a colder plug causes a rich condition!! Plugs will foul quickly also!!

`i` have a 1998 jeep grand cherokee and it keeps backfiring and running like ****...I had a code po720 but changed the output sensor and the transmission sensor changed the throttle sensor and still same...

back firing ( explosions in the exhaust) can be from fuel mixture too rich and unburnt fuel is getting to the hot exhaust
possible causes for that are excessive fuel pressure , leaking injectors ,leaking injector seals
backfiring through the inlet manifold can be calve timing, ---cam advance servo-- valve staying open ---valve clearance , problem hydraulic cam follower , incorrect firing order for the plug wires, crank/cam position sensors or wiring
IN this country there is a joke about jeeps

Troubleshooting fuel system for 1975 jeep cj5

Fuel pumps just supply fuel to the carb. Either they work or don't work. I would make sure that the mixture screws on the carb are set properly. Turn the screws in to lean out the mixture, do one at a time.
You want to turn the screws in to the point where the jeep will start to idle rough and then back out a 1/2 turn. Check your timing also. If the jeep has alot of miles on it, the timing chain will stretch and it's possible that you cannot get the correct timing.
