How much trannyfluid goes in a 99 gmc sonoma

5 QUARTS FOR FLUID FILTER CHANGE. IF REPLACING TORQUE CONVERTER OR TRANSMISSION OVER HAUL. YOU NEED 13.8 QUARTS. WHEN YOU CHANGE FLUID AND FILTER.BESURE YOU HAVE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL TO THE FULL MARK BEFORE DRIVING VECHICLE.LET ENGINE IDLE UNTIL GET WARM BUT CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID WHILE ENGINE IDLING.IF FLUID LEVEL DROP A LITTLE ADD A LITTLE MORE TO GET FLUID LEVEL AT FULL MARK.ONCE ENGINE GET OPERATING TEMPERATURE.SHIFT TRANSMISSION THROUGH ALL GEARS TWICE ONE AT A TIME.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.SHOULD BE ON FULL MARK.DRIVE VECHICLE FEW MILES CHECK FLUID LEVEL.IF FLUID LEVEL.FULL YOU GOOD.IF STILL LOW ADD A PINT AT A TIME.ONCE FLUID LEVEL CORRECT. SHIFTING OKAY TIME PLAY.YOU GOOD TO GO.

Manually shift thru all gears up & down the scale. Try adding Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, available from Ford parts dept. This REALLY STINKS!!! Don't get any on you. Pour into trans fluid. Drive a few miles shifting manually thruthe gears, then do a normal start stop drive several times. This will luburcate trans, normally used for differential but has worked in automatic transmissions of all makes for years. Otherwise mechanical problem for transmission repair facility.

Good Evening, I have a dumb question. have you cleared any current or history codes in the transmission? They will default with codes in the system. Also make note on what they are. If any and we can go from there, and yes tcm would be the next place to go but more info is best as far as codes and such.

The manual says there is no dipstick. The transmission is a sealed unit, filled for life. It's really a bad design to not have a dipstick, because transmissions will weep a little fluid at times and it's a good idea to check the level once in a while. The Manual says that if it leaks fluid you have to repair or replace the transmission. Not a valid repair when the car has 160,000 miles and it's a pint low. There's a plug on the passenger side at the bottom of the transmission to check the level (with the engine running, so it needs to be on a lift) and there's a yellow filler plug hidden under the air cleaner on top of the transmission.

If you put in 5 quarts, it is either too much or too little. Both cases will cause the fluid to foam, causing jerky shifting. Mine was too low at 185,000 miles and it was banging shifts when hot.

By the way, that transmission needs about 9.8 quarts after a pan drop and filter change, so your 5 quarts is way too little.

Check the fluid level sounds like it is low or the filter may be plugged.

02 dodge stratus only idles but does not run

The same thing happened to my 2000 dodge stratus about a month ago. Turned out my belt had broken sometime. Anyway, the car would crank and run until it got warm (10-15 miles) and then would not shift out of low gear. I got home and thought it was my alternator, but when I went to take it off to replace it I realized there was no belt. (The belt runs several key components that will not allow you to go far without.) So just to rule that out you might want to check to see if the belt is still in place.

Dodge Intrepid 2000

Have had two intrepids that each lasted to almost 200000 miles - even with teenagers driving the last few years. The gear shifting thing came up on both of them. It has always been hit or miss as to when this happens. the only solutions we used were add transmission fluid, if necessary, and otherwise change the trans fluid if its been 50,000 miles since the last change. Also, letting it sit a few minutes (to cool?) does make a difference.
