Hi Jim Russell, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? How many miles on the car? And was it doing anything "strange" before it got to this point?

Hi Coss the fluid level is correct the it only has 230,000km it just stopped going forward it won't go into and gear and is in neutral when you put it into drive, park, it didn't make any noises

It's time to have a transmission shop take a look at it. It can be as simple as the valve body needing to be cleaned or as complicated as needing a whole new transmission. You can try doing a fluid flush and new filter but that would be about the least you can get away with. Even though it only has 230K miles, it's still almost 25 years old. You can try the flush and filter change, but that runs an average of about $100US.

SOURCE: auto transmission will not engage in DRIVE gear when starting.

IT IS THE STRAINER INSIDE THE PAN IN THE TRANSMISSION,WHEN ITS COOL THE FLUID IS TO THICK TO TRAVEL AND GRITTY TO GO THROUGH THE STRAINER SCREEN,BUT WHEN THE TRANNY WARMS THE FLUID ITS THEN ABLE TO FLOW THROUGH THE SCREEN AND SHIFT PROPERLY.

The only advice I can offer is that you get under the car and check for some kind of damage. Other than that I have no suggestions. This is an eyes on problem.

i would recommend first verifying your linkage is properly adjusted. once you know your good there than you know its most likely an internal issue with the transmission. unfortunately one of the worst things you can do to a used transmission is have it flushed (unless this has been a part of the vehicle regular maintenance since new) this usually causes particulant matter to break free and clog the servos, lines and valve bodies along with the filter itself. if you havnt already you might try replacing the filter (usually about a $20 kit and 1 hr of time) however if the transmission is having internal issues there is no such thing as a cheap fix in most cases the issue could one of many and in general the best bet is a transmission overhaul or replacement transmission such as a low milage junkyard find.

My Audi A6 is stuck in neutral and will not budge I can start the car and everything works it just will not come out of neutral

When you say it is stuck in neutral what is stuck? is the shiftter stuck in the neutral postion or is the car not moving when shifter is placed in drive or other gears,
if the car doesnt move in gear i would say it is transmission releated, this may be a bad tranny or fluid is very low.

check your transmission oil, make sure it is full. this is were i would start,

Car only starts in neutral?

I was first going to say the problem is the neutral safety switch, but based on what you said about it being stuck in drive and the shifter can be moved around, I would say the cable is broke or a connector on either end of the cable. The cable connects the shifter with the shift lever on the side of the transmission.
The shift lever is probably under the master cylinder on the driver side.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 292000 miles. Runs but will not drive in any gear. Selector will go into hear but it wont move. It can be pushed while in neutral. Was told transfer case was bad but even...

Could be either, a transmission problem or transfer case problem.
Someone will probably have to remove the transfer case to find out.
The torque converter, pump, valve body, or various parts in the transmission could have failed. The transfer case could be stuck between 2wd and 4wd or could have a broken gear.

Whilst driving, my E280 gear box moved into neutral for about a second or two, and it shifted into the next gear with a strong sudden ****.

seems like faulty transmission, the reason is when you drive the car gears are up shift form 1 to 2 , 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, like that it should be 7 speed auto trans mission in your car, if you mention when which gear up shift the problem occurred I can give more information about what's the fault in transmission, so according to your details it's like two gears are engage together, when two gears are engage same time the transmission control unit understand it's something getting wrong in the transmission according to actual value of gear ratio, then trans mission change the gear to neutral for a second and after that it give the one lower gear than the gear which was stuck and drive fine, this thing might not happen all the time but is the problem verse it can happen all the time, the solution is you must get your car to the Mercedes dealer workshop then they can find what's the wrong inside the transmission before remove it, they have advance diagnose tool for it, then they will repair your transmission, this is the cheapest way, if some one repair your transmission without right understanding regarding what's the exactly fault you will be stuck, may have to be remove again and again,
