I need to know how to check the transmission fluid on a nissan maxima 96 5 speed

You have a plug on the side of the trans the lower one is for draining and the upper one is to check if you remove it and fluid comes out the level is fine

first take off the negitve battery. The starter is located on the back right top of the tranmission - it should be two 17 mm bolts: one short and one long bolt. follow the postive cable wire it go straight to the starter.

My 96 nissan maximas overdrive isnt turning on or off and my RPM's are at about 2500 at 65-70 MPH. Before when the overdrive was working my RPM's were alot lower at that speed?


I had a similar problem with my truck. It eventually go worse and I lost reverse. I had to have the transmission worked on.

WE BOUGHT A 96 MAXIMA WITH 182 K (FOR GRANDDAUGHTER) IT HAS NEVER HAD TRANSMISSION SERVICED....IS IT SAFE TO HAVE OLD TRANSMISSION FLUID DRAINED, & NEW FLUID & SCREEN INSTALLED ... WE HAVE BEEN...


Yes but only by dropping the transmission pan and screen. Newer technologies actually suction the fluid out through the filler tube which most definitely will damage the transmission. I'd also avoid the transmission "flush" that is also widely used. Dropping the pan and changing the filter is the only safe way especially since any debris would not be recirculated through the system.

on the side of the motor... don't know which side... where it meets the transmission.

Water pump connected to transmission?


sounds like bad luck! unless whoever changed the water pump for got to hook something back uo that they had to remove to get to water pump! chech fluid and look very closely around water pump for un hooked wires or small hoses
