Distributor troubleshooting

Your distributor may be installed backwards, or maybe just out of phase.
If backwards, you will probably never get it to start and, of course the solution is relatively simple.
If out of phase, the spark may be jumping to a different terminal inside the distributor cap and completely disrupting your ignition timing. See the attached video for an explanation of phasing and how to correct it on your car. (you will need an old distributor cap to drill a hole into so you can confirm spark)
It also occurs to me that the coil you have may not be compatible with your system.

I need a spark plug wire diagram for a 1973 super beatle

mcneb_59.jpg Pull the number 1 spark plug out, Turn the engine until you feel pressure on the cylinder with your finger over the hole in the head. Then get the timing mark on the crank pulley to line up with the split in the case. Pull your distributor cap off and look which way the rotor button is pointing, that will be the number one spark plug wire location. The dis. turns clockwise and run the wires 1 - 3 - 4 - 2. around the cap from that contact location.

Working on a 1973 chevy silverado with 350 v8 motor in it. I'm confused with the distributor wiring to the spark plugs. Can anyone show me how to locate the spark plugs wire and wire them according to...

So far so good. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The #1 wire goes in the distributor at the 6:30 o'clock position and the rest of the wires go clockwise from there according to the firing order. The 6:30 position should be the first one to the right of the window on the cap. Hope this helps.

How to do valve timing 1973 Monte Carlo. running ok past year but increasingly rough; edelbrock carb just cleaned; backfiring out the intake manifold. Could this be a timing problem? Seems like the valves...

I would look inside your distributor cap for cracks or debris. This is the genneral cause of a misfire. However, if the misfire is "rythmic" as in a timed pop pop pop, than you have a collapsed lifter or a bent pushrod. Thank you, Dana

Did you set the base igntion timing to Spec? When you had the cap off to replace the points did you check the springs and weights under the Ign. rotor to make sure they are free and working?
Is the vacum advance working?

Multiple cylinder misfires

cross the wire, probably the firing order problem.

Did you change the distributor cap, sometimes the distributor cap inside cracked, you won't see it, take off the distributor cap, but you have to remember the wires' order, lightly drop the distributor cap see if you can hear the cracking noise.

Or during the dark night, get a dark place, start your engine, see if there is spark out, fix that, maybe your car will run better.

When I had my Union 76 service station, I have solved several cases like thiat.

I had a big Sun electronic scope from 1973 to 1984, during that time, something I could't ping point where the problem was, therfore I used many experience, maybe I am wrong, but you can try it, I like to try everything.

Hope this ccan help you, good luck.
