Question about 1988 Pontiac Grand Am
My car lost power on the freeway and died when i tried 2 start it again it started but dies immediately
I had a similar problem with a 2000 Sunfire. The temp guage was not reading and the t/c light was on. There were no codes displayed. After some research I checked the resistance of the coolant temperature sensor and it was much to high. 100,000 ohms and should have been 2000-3000 ohms when cold. A new sensor solved the problem. There are other things which could cause your problem but this solution worked for me. Replacing the sensor is easy depending on it's location in your car. You might have to drain some coolant. Be careful and take precautions. Do it when the engine is cold.

SOURCE: Car dies while driving
First off, check your battery terminals and posts for corrosion or any other cause of a poor connection. If your connection to the battery is cutting out/back on rapidly it would cause exactly those symptoms. also inspect the battery cables end to end for poor connections corrosion or breaks/tears in the insulating coating. if that yields no answers it is probably a sensor for the ecu or the fuel delivery system. good luck!

Your fuel filter may need to be replaced and the other area that needs to ab addressed would be a ICM (ignition control module) going bad. Common for ether issues to cause you the same problems.
You can have your ICM tested at Auto Zone free of charge and you can also pick up the fuel filter from there.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

My Pontiac Grand Prix is also a 99, it has 216,+ thousand miles on it, it runs great, idles good, I need to replace the oxygen sensor tho as it shuts off on me while driving or sometimes coming to a stop. You might try checking the fuel filter and pump as well.
