Question about 2003 Nissan Altima

Will not idle

My daughter has a 2003 nissan altima and only just bought it used from a local car lot. every since she has had it, it will not idle and the check engine light comes on, if she stops at red light or even lets off gas to go around a curve it goes dead. she took to auto zone and they checked the computer and it showed that the crank shaft sensor was bad, she replaced it and it did good for about a week, then all of a sudden it started again. I have read online that there were recalls on some of these cars and that this is a problem that a lot of people have had. she ows $7000.00 on this car, can you help and tell us what we should do to fix it?

Check the idle air control valve, if that goes bad the car will have a real weak or erratic idle.. Other things might be a clogged fuel filter or faulty fuel pump,or the throttle positioning sensor might be going haywire. hope this helps and good luck.

I have recently noticed, while idling that the RPM will drop, and the engine sounds like it is under a load for 10 or so seconds. The idle then comes back to normal. This is remeniscent to when the air

Wow, a lot of netball answers on this. Carbed engine? Come one, it's a 2003 nissan. Anyway....What you seem to be describing is when ac clutch engages there is a load on the engine. I would suggest checking/testing your charging system and go from there.,

My 2003 Altima 2.5s makes a humming type (vibration?)sound.

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima making a humming sound towards the front of the motor at idle in Park.

Not sure if alternator or compressor.

Not rattle from timing cover has to be something Nissan already denies.

Heater blows cold air at low speed and idle 02 nissan altima

I worked at a Nissan dealer for 18 months and we'd get a lot of these in. The cold heat at idle is accompanied by a sloshing noise from behind the dash - you've got an air pocket in the heater core. What we used to do was lift the front end of the car about 3 feet off the ground using the hoist and take the rad cap off. Then we'd run the engine at a fast idle (jam a screwdiver against the throttle stop to hold it fast or put a slight weight on the pedal if it's Electronic Throttle Body. Run the heater on full heat and the engine like this. You'll see the rad 'burping' as the air in the cooling system travelling to the highest point it can - the open rad cap. Top up with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water as you go. When it burps no more, you have a full cooling system and should not suffer any more "cold heat".

If you do this yourself, PLEASE use jack stands, block the back wheels and put the parking brake on!!!

2003 Nissan altima alternator

The alternator is right on top of the 2.5L motor and held on by 2 14mm bolts. To remove the lower bolt (hard to reach), you must remove the coolant bottle and the IPDM fuse board and its metal box/bracket. A breaker bar really helped give enough torque to loosen the bolts. Approach the drive belt from under the front passenger tire. There is a tension adjuster (hard to reach) bolt that loosens the belt and allows you to remove it from the alternator.
