A compression leak occurs when a cylinder is on the compression stroke (just before firing) and some of the air/fuel mixture escapes.
It can escape through a blown head gasket, a loose spark plug (for gas engines), a bad valve or valve seat, a cracked block, etc.

Compression is what happens when the piston comes up and compresses the fuel/air mixture. Then the spark plug ignites it and the explosion drives the piston down in turn, turning the Crankshaft in turn making the car go. A compression leak is when this compressed fuel/air mixture is escaping from the combustion chamber.. This can happen 3 ways. 1. Bad piston rings, 2. Blown head gasket or cracked head or block, (usually caused by overheating), Or the least costly.. loose spark plugs.

1993 nissan quest wont start after over heating

Overheating will damage the head gasket and the cylinder head.
Insufficient compression in the cylinders due to leaks and the engine will not start. To begin with run a compression check on all cylinders and then any cylinder with compression not at spec run a leak down test to see where the compression loss is going.

2002 3.7 litre jeep. How can I ck to see if a valve is fully closing? There is no lash adj. Springs look o.K. no compression #2 cyl. All others o.K.

You put compressed air into the cylinder an listen for the air escaping , if coming out of the throttle plate ,burnt intake valve . If you hear air coming out of exhaust pipe , burnt exhaust valve . If you hear air coming out dip stick tube bad rings or piston damage. How To Perform Leak Down Test EricTheCarGuy

Po 306 engine missfire on no 6

If all you say is correct, then smoke test the intake
& you should have a vacuum leak next to #6

Next do a cylinder leak down, verse a compression test

Always do leak down, don't care about compression until
you fail the leak down

Compression check

I would suggest a Cylinder Leak Down Test, will tell you
more

It will tell you if you have leaking intake valve, exhaust valve,
ring leaking,& maybe cylinder head sealing

You then can follow up with compression ,but why

On either test your just comparing one cyl to the next, as much
as the actual values reached.

There are several electronic test methods used also & require
less time & labor.

A/c compresser leaks

If it is leaking oil/freon, you would need to pull the pulley off and replace the seal. Most people replace the compressor.

My 1998 saturn has low compression in number three cylinder could it be stuck and if so what can i do to free it up

Low compression is not a "stuck" issue, usually there is a valve leak or compression ring issue. Both are fairly involved to repair. The next step is a wet compression test. If the compression goes up when wet, rings are suspect, if not valve is suspect. The next test is leak down test.... BUT compression loss is not a simple fix.

Check engine light is on, they say multiple miss fire in cylcinder 6. but no one can find the problem van runs great

first do a cylinder compression test on engine to verify good engine compression this should be around 110psi to 175 psi check for vacuum leak, intake port for #6 cylindermay be leaking air, or also check coil for that cylinder, if wire and spark plug have already been changed, last replace fuel injector for that cylinder.

Low compression in cylinder 4

When an engine has a cylinder with low compression it will be caused by a mechanical malfunction, and the reasons for low compression in a cylinder can be a bent or burnt intake or exhaust valve, or a valve that is not closing all the way because of a piece of carbon or an improper valve adjustment, the head gasket could be faulty around the compression sealing rings, or the cylinder head could be warped or even cracked, and the piston for that cylinder could be damaged with a crack or a hole, or the piston rings could be worn out or damaged.

The cause of the low compression can be determined without having to dis-assemble and inspect the engine by a "Compression Leak-Down Test" and a good repair shop or someone with a compression leak-down tester and a good air compressor can perform that test.

Low compression on one side, one fowled plug

A compression leak down test would tell you where the compression leak is coming from, and you should call around to find a repair shop that knows what a compression leak down test is.

A burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve, warped cylinder head or faulty head gasket, or a damaged piston or piston compression ring could cause a compression leak, and a leaking intake manifold gasket that allows oil to enter the intake through the lifter valley could foul out a spark plug, and also it could be a damaged piston or broken piston rings that is fouling out the spark plug.
