Get the vehicle towed to an automobile dealer -- it's not safe to drive, if you cannot use the steering wheel to control the direction that it travels.

Try to determine if it's a steering or suspension problem. Raise the front end on jackstands or blocks and observe steering parts while someone turns the wheel back and forth. You could have the car running so the power steering is also working, but do not try to put car in gear to turn the wheels. Keep it in neutral or park. Watch the tie rods as they move back and forth. Do the inner fender shields get caught by any moving parts? If you hear the crack, could it be coming from the rack and pinion? If you can't hear or see anything abnormal, it may be a suspension part, or something not associated with the steering. That should give you a little peace of mind. Check the brake backing plate on the right side, well, on both sides. They are made of thin metal and if broken or cracked, that may be your noise.
Hope you find it, hey, good luck.

Squeel sound when turning steering wheel

Your power steering pump serpentine belt is probably slipping. Check the belt for wear, cracks, etc. If it is not worn, try tightening the belt tensioner. If it continues to squeal, replace the belt. You might also want to check the power steering fluid for the proper amount.

My 2003 ram truck has a loud squeaking sound when turning the steering wheel and when I go over a bump. What could it be? The truck only has 55,000 miles on it and is in like new condition.

You could have two diffident problems here.
1st the sound when you turn the steering wheel is most likely a loose or worn power steering pump belt. Check to see if underside of belt has any cracks, if so replace. Most likely at 55k miles it is just loose and needs re-tightened.
The squeak when going over a bump could be: a bad shock absorber, a bad or un-lubricated ball joint, or am "A" arm bushing. Check by having someone stand on front bumper and jump, or push up and down to see if that sound is reproduced.
If your truck is a 4x4, one other problem that could cause the sounds in these condition is a bad CVC joint (Axle joint).

Probably low or out of fluid ... you probably cannot repair this. Please have it looked at before more damage is done to your system.

You can put oil in it ... if it is leaking, that is temporary. This leak needs to be fixed.

Wheels will not turn when steering wheels are turned

Pretty doubtful it is your steering column. When all the junk around it is stripped away, it is a simple steel shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering box.
You can do what no one online can do for you...Have someone turn the wheel and look at what is moving and what is not. Likely it's something major like the steering box or the chassis where the box is mounted that has failed. Whatever it turns out to be, it's likely to be obviously broken. (easier to find than a squeak or slight noise.
When you find it, ask if you need help with the repair procedure!!!
Good luck!!

Creaking sound while turning steering wheel

i'll bet this is a front wheel drive or four wheel drive. when the front wheels are tied to the drive train. the front axle shafts bearings can go kaput. jack up the vehicle and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and spin one tire at a time by hand. you are bound to hear snaping and cracking coming from the axle shafts.

I am down to putting steering wheel and instruments in a 67 mustang after a 10 year long project. I have parts, I think, but can't figure out how the steering wheel, horn ring and all the misc parts go...

Are you installing the original steering wheel or a replacement? Screw holes shouldn't be off at all if all original parts are installed. Sounds like a replacement part may be for another model year. Double check all the steering/horn/turn signal switch plates to make sure they're the correct part numbers. Only 10 years, huh? I'm in year 3 and still haven't gotten to the floor pans! Maybe another 8 - 10 years and I'll have it on the road.

4x4 chevy blazer popping sound when i turn wheels

Lube the tie rod ends, center link, upper and lower ball joints, and steering link. If noise is still the same, you probably have worn upper or lower control arrn bushings or a steering box problem.
