Hello Carolyn
what car, a jeep GC, sure, but what year, and what engine size.
jumps. (ill assume engine jumps and not transmission slips)
the engine can jump or many types of reasons, failures. 50 or more.
i guess you what us to guess, and not do tests and find true cause?
1: failure to do the service on the car is the all time top #1 reason.
spark plugs, and filters stop this list. every 60k miles or as the operators guide in the glove box states.
2: bad fuel. (or wrong fuel)
3: Bad TPS sensor.
4: low fuel pressure.
5: engine intake air leaks. (vacuum leaks)
6: bad MAF or MAP sensor,
7: ASD relay dropping out, for a second due to 7 errors it sees. ask.
8: 12vdc battery power dropping out for any reasons, (many)

NOT SURE WHAT YOU SAYING ? WHEN GETTING JUMP STARTED, THE BATTERY FROM THE GOOD VEHICLE MUST PLACE JUMPER CABLES ON BATTERY TERMINALS, THE CAR BEING JUMPED, YOURS, THE (+) TERMINAL IS JUMPED FROM GOOD BATTERY, THEN THE (-) JUMPER CABLE FROM GOOD BATTERY GETS CLAMPED TO YOUR CARS FRAME OR ENGINE BLOCK, NOT YOUR DEAD BATERY !!!!!!! YOU MAY HAVE SHORTED SOMETHING OUT, MAYBE EVEN YOUR COMPUTER CHIP IN THE ECM ! YOU NEED A MASTER TECH TO HELP YOU ON THIS ONE, I WOULD'NT TOUCH THIS WITH A TEN FOOT POLE ! SORRY, I COULD BE WRONG, BUT, NOT AN EASY ISSUE OVER THE NET !!!!!!

97 civic 5spd. Jumping while accelerating.

Just check the transmission fluid-if low you have to add until it is full-do not overfill though. Better to have it just a bit low than overfilling it.
In park, can you accelerate to 2500-3000 rpm, and hold steady with no shaking or indications of a miss? If it runs good in park or neutral, then you probably have transmission problems. Frankly, it is pretty rare for a torque converter to develop a problem. Check your fluid, or try changing the fluid if it is dark or dirty looking.

sounds like your transmission filter and fluid need changed if this is an automatic, if its a standard then your clutch may be starting to slip
