SOURCE: 1988 chevy scottsdale truck shutting off

I had an identical problem with my 88 Scottsdale. After a week of head scratching by my local dealer, and $1000. worth of shop diagnostic time, they found a bad distributor shaft. Apparently, there is some sort of star wheel on the end of the shaft which has lost magnetism. Replace the shaft.

Check the plug wire from the ignition coil to the distributor cap.
If you haven't already, replace the distributor cap and rotor.
The GM Vortec's have issues with moisture getting inside the cap and rotor and causing problems.

Your distributor internal part has failed, it is the reluctor it shifted and is sending wrong injector signal in the wrong area just replace the whole distributor or take it out open the cap you will see a star shape device that is the reluctor, it shifted you can probably move it and its not suppose to move but because of wear and tear it happened

How do u time a 1996 s10 4.3 vortec

The vortec 4.3 is self timing, and not adjustable. if you have the distributor out, you need to have the engine on #1tdc, and install the distributor with the rotor on, once the distributor is in place, the rotor must point to the small #6 on distributor body.(the top edge of the black plastic housing, there is a small arrow, with a #6 on it).remembering the cap is cross fire, the rotor should point to #1 cyl on the cap.

Remove cylinder # 1 spark plug, # 1 is the front one on drives side, turn crankshaft pulley to TDC on compression stroke, you'll feel the comperssion at cylinder #1 spark plug hole, follow cylinder # 1 spark plug wire to distributor cap, mark outer part of distributor where # 1 sits, remove distributor and restabe distributor with rotor at mark you made, then set timing.
