You need to scan the computer for trouble codes. If the light was on, there must be codes set. On a '95 Buick, it would be OBD-1, On Board Diagnostics-first generation ('96 and later is all OBD-2).
The diagnostic connectors are different for OBD1 and OBD2, but in '94 and '95, GM was on some models using a "hybrid" diagnostic link connector. You will just have to find the right diagnostic connector to get your codes. The guys at autozone or a national parts store who do engine scans for free may help you figure it out. If it is a straight forward OBD 1 connector, a cheap code reader could scan for trouble codes. For the OBD1, you can also use a jumper wire between terminals
A & B of the diagnostic link connector. Turn key to on, and two digit codes will begin to flash on the check engine light. Code 12, for instance, would be a flash, pause, two short flashes, and longer pause before the next code appears. Code 12 by the way, just means that the computer is in diagnostic mode-after that any set codes will appear or be flashed. Code 55 may also be flashed-this code means the end of codes that are set.

Engine maint. light reset

OBD1 System

That is just a reminder & has no effect on
any vehicle system (just a gadget)

You need OBD1 professional scan tool software
I had the same vehicle & the same thing happen

I'm looking at my 1992 factory service manual
It is called an EMR--Emission Maintenance Reminder light
It stores every 8 miles
Checks at 60,000,82,500,120,000 miles & then sets the light

It is for replacement of : EGR Valve,O2 Sensor,PVC Valve, etc

Mine only came on at 80,000 & I had & still have the scan tool

I never tried any other means to clear it,haven't worked on OBD1
in over 10 years, just use the scope on the old scan tool for O2 Sensor switching times

Engine stalls but starts right back up

How long since a tune-up? To check for some codes, use a jumper wire between A and B terminals at datalink connector. Then, turn key just till dash lights come on. The mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes, your looking for two digit numbers. This is 12 pin data link connector obd1.

Where is the plug to the check enginge light

GM OBD connectors are under the dash in the driver's area on most cars.Keep in mind,an '89 is an OBD1 system(GM specific)---OBDII (standard for all vehicles in the U.S.) wasn't in use until 1996,so you will need to use a shorting clip to read the codes through the check engine light, unless you have a GM compatible scan tool.(I can't remember which two pins in the connector need to be shorted, but I do remember they are side by side to each other in one of the corners of the plug).

O/d light blinks when driveing o/d seems to be engaged car has 198000 miles and runs very good also engine light is on

O/D light blinks, but with that the check engine light is ON.--- This will make your troubleshooting easier. When the check engine light comes on, and remains on, this indicates that there is error stored in your cars computer.---- Once the computer is scanned, you will get error codes, as per that error code it will point towards faulty part, which is causing the O/D light to blink.-------- Most probably the O/D light blinks, If a problem exists in No. 1 or No. 2 solenoids or speed sensors .
--------------- For car after 1995 it requires OBD2 tool and for car before 1995 it requires OBD1 tool.------- --------- You car will require OBD1 tool. There are very few auto parts store and repair centers who have OBD1 tool.In your case you required OBD1 tool.------ You can just contact local auto-parts store and they will guide you to the nearest store who has OBD1 tool. There you can get your car scanned. If there is error set in your cars computer, then you will receive the error code.As per error code it will point towards the faulty part causing this problem in your car.------------- -------------- The codes which you get is scanning will be mostly any of this following codes:--- DTC P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
. DTC P0750 - Shift Solenoid "A" Malfunction
. DTC P0753 - Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical Malfunction
. DTC P0755 - Shift Solenoid "B" Malfunction
. DTC P0758 - Shift Solenoid "B" Electrical Malfunction
. DTC P0770 - Shift Solenoid "E" (SL) Malfunction
. DTC P0773 - Shift Solenoid "E" (SL) Electrical Malfunction
. DTC P1520 - Stop Light Switch Signal Malfunction
. DTC P1705 - Direct Clutch Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
. DTC P1765 - Shift Solenoid Valve SLN Circuit Malfunction
. DTC P1780 - Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction
--------------- Now it all depends on what code you get, as per that you can replace the following part.------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Changed a coolant hose no problem. Went to drive the van, and the gear shifter wouldnt engage, then put it in neutral then started it, then to find out that the gas gauge, mileage gauge, blinkers, and...

The problem indicates towards tranny gear box and instrument cluster board.--------- Get the transmission fluid level checked, if its low it has to be refilled.---------- Many a times the vehicles computer system gets disturbed and and its start behaving like this.--------- Disconnect the negative battery terminal of your cars battery and wait for 30 minutes then reconnect the terminal properly. Then start and see, if same problem is noticed.--------- But if that is not helping then gear box needs to be taken apart and inspected for tranny not shifting problem. And instrument cluster board has to be taken apart from dash to check the board.--------- Also as you mentioned that ABS light is on, this indicates there is any code stored in the engine computer.-------- If you can get the car scanned , then it will be much better for you to resolve the problem.Because in scanning, it will point you towards the exact error code, and due to which part this problem is occurred. At autozone service center is absolutely free to get vehicle scanned. They do it free of charge.------------- --------------- ]For car after 1995 it requires OBD2 tool that autozone has and for car before 1995 it requires OBD1 tool. And autozone don't scan car before 1995.Because they don't have OBD1 tool.------- --------- There are very few auto parts store and repair centers who have OBD1 tool.In your car is before 1995 model then you require OBD1 tool.------ You can just contact local auto-parts store and they will guide you to the nearest store who has OBD1 tool. There you can get your car scanned. If there is error set in your cars computer, then you will receive the error code.As per error code it will point towards the faulty part causing this problem in your car.------ This will help. Thanks.Helpmech.

Car has little power, burning an extreme amount of gas, makes rumbling noise, and engine light is on. I have had new spark plugs and an enginge coil put on it and it is still doing the same thing.

if check engine light is on, get it scanned to find problem code. if no scanner most auto parts stores will scan for free. just get the codes from them to see what is wrong! you can start at airfilter and continue to throttle body to see if all is ok. there are a few causes for this, so have it scanned if light stays on.for instance- a maf sensor causes poor running, it will set a code or check engine light will come on, lack of power, buck/****, hesitation/stumble on acceleration, a bad cam sensor will throw off spark timing which will impact fuel econony. and cause engine to misfire and poor acceleration. this code will also set check engine light on. so get it scanned to find problem code. have a good day !

97 s10 stock 2.2l enginge 5 spd starts up fine. but at idle the engine is not smooth it has a very light sputter to it.

You need a compression check to rule out stick lifters or valves not closing properley at idle.

If ok the try a live data check to explore whether the coils are slightly missfiiring.

I am sure the fault will ly with one of the above.
