The ground wire is supposed to connect to a threaded case connection towards the bottom of the alternator, then go to the engine block, usually by one of the engine mount upper plate bolts.

I have a 1986 volvo 240 wagon that im having a major charging issue with. i have replaced the alternator 7 times this week brand new, i have replaced the battery 3 times.

Is it possible you have a blown fusible link? Wiring diagram should show where these are located. You say the small red wire is zero volts with key on. Is this the wire that supplies "exciter" volts to alt? If so, it should be 12 volts at key on I think.

Hello Alexis,My name is Andres and i will help you with the problem that you are having There is no tensioner per se on the 240. The tensioning is done by moving the alternator. At the top of the alternator there is a tensioning arm with an elongated hole in it. There is a square necked screw which goes through the arm and fastens to the alternator. At the end of the arm there is an adjusting screw. As you are removing the alternator forget about the adjusting screw. Slacken the nut on the square necked screw and push the alternator to the side, releasing the tension. If the alternator won't move, loosen the flange screw underneath the alternator until it will. With the belt off remove the wires from the back of the alternator, making sure you know which goes where. Remove the two bolts you have loosened and remove the alternator. HAVE IN MIND THAT There is a problem on the older 240 series, 1984 B23F I know from personal experience, with the ground not being intact between the alternator and the metal grounding point. Please check the wiring loom before you re-install your new alternator for a good grounding wire, or you'll be wondering why your Swede won't crank when you've just replaced the alternator. If worst comes to worst, you can create a temporary ground for the alternator with a piece of copper wire. Connect one end to a good unpainted ground near the alternator(strut towers will do), and the other to the attachment bolt on the alternator mounting bracket itself. This will suffice until you can get it properly fixed

My 86 volvo wont charge?

If you start the car and then remove the positive cable from the battery the car should run off of the alternator. If it dies you alternator or the wiring is bad, most likely the alternator.

Where does the blue an white wire go on the alternator an what does it do

an alternator has a power out wire a smaller power in wire to excite the field, a ground wire for the field and a large ground wire. Most ground wires are brown. And most power wires are red. You check check the wire for ground and power with and ohm/volt meter. Put the voltmeter on volts and connect the black wire from the meter to ground and the red to the wire, turn on the key and if you have volts it is a power wire. If no volts the turn the key off, select ohms and attach the black meter wire to ground (such as the frame or any metal) then attach the red wire to your blue/white wire if you show 0 ohms or low ohms then it is a ground.

Make sure the red wire on the unit is hooked up to power. The blue antenna wire is hooked up (or to the factory amplifier) and the yellow wire on the radio is hooked up to a key on power supply. If it works and you lose the memory when you shut the key off, switch the red and yellow wire power supplies.

There is a wire that seems to be cut that seems to connect the alternator to a input under the engine. I was wondering what that wire is.

its a grounding wire, the negative pole of the alternator, to ensure connection and prevent sparks if the mount were to vibrate ,the small electrical sparks can produce up to 3000v and fry some electronics in the car (same problem as with jump starting), its a good idea to reconnect it again,

I had a senior moment and during the duration between removal and replacement (alternator) forgot where the wiring connects. Volvo 240. Only three wires. One from Batt to B+ but my dash light (Battery ) is...

the thin red wire should go to the blade connector on the alternator. The battery cable which should be red and hot goes to the B+ connector. The other wire should be black is a ground , goes the alternator ground terminal --a D- .
