Question about 1994 Pontiac Firebird

2 Answers

At times cranks and runs fine other times it will not crank

1994 firebird 5.7
sometimes it starts and runs perfect for days/w2eeks, other times without warning it will not crank, and all idiot lights on the dash will not function. to get it to restart its just a guess. it may star 2 minutes later or may not even crank for days. i have replaced the starter, battery, and checked and re-checked all wiring.
Even when it will NOT crank, the exciter wire from the ign. switch to the solenoid [yellow] under the dash/column area functions perfectly, with a test light. Turn the key in the crank position and the light lites. The ign. key DOES have a small chip mounted in the metal portion of the key. NOT under the head/plastic portion.
And help ?
Thanks
Ed

Hello edspring1...the little key chip you mentioned is the onboard security system for your firebird...GM called it the VAT system..it's possible this could be the cause of the no start conditions, sometimes they will reset if you disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 mins.
I really dont think that is your problem though...under the steering pillar...there is a "slider" type ignition switch...meaning...the terminals slide togather to make contact when the key is turned...these darn things get worn to a point they start arching and eventually wont make contact at all...i replaced one last week on a 95 firebird that had the same problem you are describing now.
i'll post a pic of the slider set in position for a tilt steering and non-tilt column....note the difference.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee and it always starts up, but sometimes it just shuts off randomly while I'm driving and after a few minutes of rest turns back on, the battery will still be worki

Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test

First of all. We have put 2 new starters on this car recently. We thought the first might have been a fluke. However we had the 2nd checked and it tested fine as did the battery and alternator. Problem is...

what do you mean by wont start?? engine cranks but wont run? engine wont crank? Is the anti-theft light flashing? is the car in park? did you put it in Neutral and try to crank it?

C220 1994 sometimes doesn't start

you should change the crankshaft position sensor this is the only thing i could think of that would cause this type of no start intermittently, when you come back 5-10 minutes later does it fire right up or is it an extended crank time? either way i believe that very well could be your problem and i would have never changed a perfectly good mass airflow meter for a problem like this,,please rate good luck -jeff
