2004 ford freestar. 182,875 Kms. No leaks, no smoke, no check engine light on, no trouble going into gear, regular oil changes etc and a new fuel filter. Van stalled 2 times. Each time it had no trouble re-starting. Mechanic replaced the alternator and a little metal bar that had come out at one end. Van ran fine on the way home. Next morning it stalled 6 times in a 5 block radius. Again each time it restarted just fine. Took it back to the mechanic and they cleans a bunch if stuff in it and he said he drove it and ran the engine continuously and it never stalled. Now because I have small kids, I'm scared to drive it. Any ideas of what the issue could be.

Have the ignition switch checked not where the key goes fords have a switch that is located on top of the steering colum under the dash when driving the van kinda giggle the key switch or even just sitting in the van in the driveway ford has had many problems with this switch on steering colum

    Okay, so after getting sick of being afraid to drive my van, I went out to start it up and see what happened. I popped the hood to poke around and found the oil dip stick not pressed into its spot. Suddenly the van sounded like it was going to stall but didn't. I checked the battery and found that both cable terminal connectors were so loose that they were almost completely off. I tightened them up and drove the van around with no apparent issues. Although I didn't drive it very far, is it possible that the loose battery cables were the source of my stalling issues? Remember.. No codes, no leaks or smells and new alternator and fuel filter.

    Thanks! I hope it solved the issue..
    Although I'm a peeved that the mechanics never noticed it!
    They scanned it, replaced the alternator and that's it!! Why would they not have notice the battery connectors!??
    Well here's to hoping!!

your gas tank needs flushing out,maybe got gritt inside. carburator needs filter needs cleaning .,possible air leak from gaskets., what about distributor breaking down

Now you can do the Fuel Pump

They seize up mechanically and fail

Did you drive with a fuel pressure gauge,
taped to the windshield

Got a good fuel filter

Looking won't help you

Always do some type of testing,
before replacing anything

I had same problem .I took 2 months taking car apart and found 2 problems one is crank shaft sensor( when it gets hot it shorts when you get a computer to check it it says its OK) The second item took the longest to find.Its the female side to the wiring harness plug mounted on the fire wall you can check this by loosening the center bolt and gently wiggle the male side of the plug the engine will start or cut off . the socket that the pin goes into has a bent piece of metal used as a spring for the pin to lean against ( they break from to many amps making the metal fragile) so the worst ones are the injectors , the computer runs on the ground side so you will find power but no ground.I wired mine to eliminate the plug altogether runs great .

2004 Ford Freestar 3.9L V6 w/barely any power esp. up hills,motor gets tight & lifters get loud when driven,air leak miss coming from motor.Has no codes.What could be the possible problems with it?

A big vacuum leak somewhere. Need a smoke test to confirm. Put thickr oil are old...inspect cooling sys.....change plug wires etc. Du a fuel pressure test

My 2004 ford freestar runs well but is leaking about a quart of oil a week almost

If it's leaking from inside the engine then it would be coming from the valve cover. The cover gasket seal is no longer sealing properly. If oil is leaking down under the car then check around the oil pan, could be gasket or rear main oil seal or front oil seal.

Check the mass airflow sensor. Possible dirt build up.
Check the rubber vacuum hoses for leaks.

I have a 2004 Freestar and had the oil changed and it immediately started misfiring and knocking, come to find out they put the wrong oil in and have been doing so for 4 years! They are denying that is the...

The type of oil in the engine will not affect the check engine light. The engine light only comes on when something in the engine management system is out of specifications. Any sensor reading out of specification, e.g. oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor etc., will trip the engine light. The only way I can think that the oil changers could be responsible is if they moved or damaged some wiring or a sensor etc. while doing the oil change.

if you have a bad spark plug wire, it will draw condensation and make engine run rough.... you can check this by getting a spray bottle and filling it with water, spray a mist over top of the wires while the car is running, and if one is bad it will show.... (looks like little lightning coming off of wire) .... hope this helps

Engine lamp will come on if idle is too low / fuel mixture is too lean or too rich.
A faulty spark plug will cause this also.

common problem with the 4.2L is o2 sensors, depending on the code. you need a obd11 scan tool and it will tell you which bank is faulty. your vehicle has 3 o2 sensors.
