Hi trying to set the timing on my j1 elantra its a 16 valve and each cam has two marks on it.so my question is what positions should the cam lobes be at when timing is supposed to be correct.thanks


no 1 piston tdc
the cam lobes for no 1 piston should in such a position so that a slight turn of the cam shaft one way makes the exhaust start to close and the inlet start to open or the other way the inlet start to close and the exhaust start to open
this is known as valve rock or valve overlap and occurs when the cam shaft is properly timed to the tdc position of the piston
for a twin cam engine the cam lobes position will be the same operation just that the inlet cam rock will be for the inlet cam and the exhaust cam rock will be for the exhaust cam

Sliding gate pauses and shakes when it first starts, both opening and closing. Does this for a while, going very slow, then smooths out and closes and opens ok.


most sliding gates suffer form dirt, grass , rocks in the gate track so constant cleaning of that track is essential
small twigs , rocks will slide along with the wheels on opening but are an obstruction for the wheels on closing
most closing gates run a cog and rack system at the bottom ot the gate so check that the mesh of the rack and cog is correct at either end

I believe the timing marks no longer line up after replacing my timing belt. How can I determine if correction is needed? How do I correct timing mark alignment?


there is a method but you will have to have an understanding of valve timing
in an engine regardless of number of pistons when number 1 piston is TDC not firing, then the exhaust valve will be open and ready to close and the inlet valve will be closed and ready to open
so bring the piston up and near tdc
as you approach tdc you will see the exhaust start to close and at the same time the inlet valve will start to open
if you rock the crank back and forward slightly at tdc you will see that the valves are rocking
this is valve rock and indicates the cam is in time with the crank
it is only necessary to do it with no 1 piston
It doesn't matter how many cam shafts ( one cam shaft can be inlet valves only and the other can be exhaust valves only) there are, it is the exhaust and inlet valves for no 1 piston that you are looking at
how do you get tdc-- remove a plug and with a piece of wire place the end on the piston crown and as the piston comes up the wire will be pushed out as you rock the piston the wire will move in and out and the point before movement is tdc
probably as clear as mud unless you are engine savvy

I took out the cylinder head for reconditioning after the car overheated ,then resetting valve timing is my problem now?


Is number 1 on tdcc or tdci? It should be tdcc with both number one cylinder valves closed as they would be on number one tdcc. I have no idea why you would be rocking number 5 cylinder valves with number one on tdcc or otherwise. The valve and ignition timing needs to be set correct on number one tdcc and then all others will fall into their correct timing also.

I have a oz xe 4.1 lt 250 xflow motor which i have rebuilt and put flat top pistons in bored out 60 thou shaved yella terra head 15 thou and has a very mild cam after lining up timing marks the inlet


when setting up the valve timing it is always done on the exhaust stoke.. Place the piston on TDC and set the valve timing so that the exhaust valve is just closing and the inlet is just opening. Rocking the crank a bit before tdc to a bit after tdc will produce a movement where the exhaust starts to close as the inlet starts to open. This is known as valve rock or valve overlap. The cam modification is of no consequence as the as all that is modified is the valve duration , not when they open or close. With the cam now timed to the crank turn the crank 180 degrees and set the ignition timing to the degrees advanced recommended ( 10-12 degrees bftdc is recommended for starting). Place the HT leads in the correct firing order and when running use a timing light to adjust ignition timing. If you are fitting a new cam then you must bedding in grease and when the motor starts it has to be run at around 2.000rpms for around 10 minutes to set (harden) the cam lobes or else they will wear off very quickly.

Engine won't running after replaced head gasket


did you change the timing belt ..when the head gaskets are replaced ,,the vehicle got so hot it stretched it out of time ..It is mainly a strong rubber band in my opinion ,,but it will not crank if the belt is out of time totally or if the belt is broke ..takes me as a mechanic 4 hours to do this job

the piston has to be on tdc
the valves have to be in the valve rock position
that is the exhaust is just starting to close at the same time as the inlet is just starting to open
the number of links should now be at the timing marks or the timing marks should line up when the crank is turned one full revolution

Put on a new timing belt now it wont start


I need some clarification. Did you replace the belt because it broke? If so you may need to replace the head. The problem is if the belt breaks when your moving it usually damages the head and thus needs to be replaced.

I installed a new head. i see where u need to line up marks on gears with ones on timing cover. How come some people tell u to line the marks towards each other. also i had to pull exhaust cam to torque...


How to time engine --Turn crankshaft to t.d.c. turn camshaft so valves on number four cylinder start to open and close ( rock back and forth )line up marks on cover and cam gear .key way will line up ,may have to move cam just a bit.

u start with no1 get the valves rocking which means turn engine over by hand til no 1 rockers one rocker is going up and the is going down u may have to turn the engine back and forth slowly
to see it . once u have no 1 rocking u can adjust no 6 valves adjust them with a little clearance so the push rod still spins freely

next look at chart
1 rocking adjust 6
5 rocking adjust 2
3 rocking adjust 4
6 rocking adjust 1
2 rocking adjust 5
4 rocking adjust 3

once u have made these adjustments recheck firing order 153624
try and restart engine if it starts the turn all rocker ajuster a further 1/4 of a turn and your done u may have too wait a bit of time for the liffters to bleed down after u do final adjustment if it dont start
