Check the oil level and condition in the trans, then check to see if there are any codes set for the transmission. if there is then tests will have to be done to find the problem. I suggest you take you truck to a reputable trans shop and have it checked out and repaired. as there are special tools needed to do trans work.

SOURCE: Transmission problems

If you have not had your transmission serviced in the last 30K I would start with that. when the filters start to get restricted it can cause this problem. Be certain who ever does the job is familiar with chrysler transmission as they require atf+ 4 fluid and the clutch bands need to be adjusted to the right spec. It is also possible that the vehicle speed senser is bad this would most likely affect your speedometer as well. there is also the chance that there is an electrical problem bad switch or short in the wiring this is unlikely

SOURCE: Trouble code P1740 on 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

I had the same code on my 2001 dodge 2500. The truck wouldn't shift from 3-4. I pulled the trans pan off and replaced a broken spring ($2.00). It is behind a thin plate with 3-4 small torq screws. You don't have to remove the valvebody. Only took me 45 minutes to fix.

I would like to give thanks to Jeff Russel from Teal automotive. He said this is a very common problem. He sells any part for any automatic Transmision and his prices are very affordable.
Here is a link to the website.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1997 dodge ram 1500 (360) transmission.

My 95 Cummins Dodge had the same problem and adding "Lucas Transmissiion Fix" cured it completely and permanently.

Thier claim is as follows:

Lucas Transmission Fix is a non-solvent formulas that stops slip, hesitation and rough shifting in worn transmissions and completely eliminates most seal leaks. Use in any transmission for preventative maintenance.Use also in light duty manual transmissions to increase shifting ease and transmission life.
Key Benefits

  • Contains no solvents
  • Lowers operating temperatures and stops foaming
  • Can be added to existing fluid without draining any out
  • Effective in an extremely high percentage of cases

98 dodge ram when to use your overdrive knockoff

If your mean when is it ok to disengage the overdrive, I don't think there are any set rules since the operation of the overdrive is fully automatic. On my 2001 Dakota, I would often turn it off when I was in a school zone or an area with a very slow speed limit. Perhaps when you are carrying a heavy load or pulling a trailer, you might want to leave the overdrive off until you reach cruising speed.

Transmission does not always shift into overdrive

Governor pressure sensor or solenoid is going bad. To replace them drop the tranny pan, remove the filter , and the parts are pretty ez to get to. These aren't cheep thou, but replace them as a set. Parts will probly run about $200.
