Front diff Can I remove the CV axles but leaving the the part of axle which holds hub on. Front differential is bad and I'm not putting anymore money in this thing

That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings

Naturally you need to remove the tire then the brake caliper. After the brake caliper is removed then you need to remove the 34mm axle nut that is inside the hub. After that is removed then you can remove the hub. Becareful not to damage the hub seal on the back or you will have to buy a new hub (100 or more). Then you need to remove the strut knuckle assembly. Once the knuckle assembly is removed then you can pull the CV axle. Take care the inner CV housing is held in place by an inner snap ring. You will probably have to pry off the inner housing. Once the axle is off then install the new axle (if you buy complete axle). Make sure if you are doing both that you take care which side you are installing. I made that mistake and double the work. Slide the new axle on the spline and make sure it is seated completely. Then put back together the reverse of removal.

Lift and support front end on suitable jack stands preferably on frame. Remove right front cv axle, stub shaft, and seal. You will need to pull the right front brake caliper assembly loose and place to the side. Then remove bolts from shock and upper control arm and hub nut to do this. Next, remove axle lock actuator on passenger side of front axle. Place a drain pan underneath front diff cover and remove cover and drain axle. In the center of differential there will be an 8 mm head bolt holding spider gear cross-shaft. Remove bolt and cross-shaft only! Push inner axle in until clip clears inside of passenger spider gear. Set clip aside and push/pull axle shaft straight out to passenger side.

Yes is the short answer. Did you blow the gears in your front differential or you going to put a whole new pumpkin in? If you are replacing the entire pumpkin drain it first. Then make sure to support it with a transmission jack first. Remove the tires. Then remover the CV axles and lower the pumpkin. Your vehicle requires a 75w90 synthetic axle lube for a refill. I need to remove my front axel on my 1989 toyota camry


Jack up car and apply e-brake. car will roll if one of the front tires leaves the ground. remove tire , spindal nut and lower ball joint bolts. remove axle from hub then use a prybar to pop it out of trans. the passenger side will have a braket holding axle to engine , remove bolts from braket or squeeze snap-ring to rmove axle from braket.

That will be a Huge job. The whole front diff must come out of the car and the case will need to be taken apart to even gain acess to the carrier side bearings.
The hub bearing is where the wheel bolts up is that maybe what you are talking about?
Also the axle seal isn't that bad to do you need to remove the cv shaft then it's just a simple remove the seal and install the new one.
But all of these jobs will be big ones.

How do i remove the front left axle?


to remove your front axles also known as cv axles you have to pull your brake caliper and rotor off. Then you have to break your hub assembly nut that holds the cv axle tight to the hub assembly. Then you have to bust loose your upper and lower ball joints. After then its 4 or 6 bolts where your cv axle attachs to your front differental.

My front differential is leaking!


I cannot see it, but I am guessing that you need to replace your axle seal. To do this,you have to pull your CV shaft out. Remove the tire, remove the caliper from the top of the rotor. Using a hammer on the back, remove the rotor. Take off the spindle (axle) nut, separate the axle (CV shaft) from the hub. Replace seal. It should pop right out. Good luck!

Removal and Installation
NOTE: This procedure applies to both rear halfshaft assemblies.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not loosen the rear axle wheel hub retainer until after the wheel and tire assembly are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.
    With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. NOTE: Have an assistant press the brake pedal to keep the axle from rotating.
    Remove and discard the rear axle wheel hub retainer and the washer.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: To prevent damage to the brake hose, do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the hose.
    Remove the brake disc.
    1. Remove the two bolts and lift the disc brake caliper and brake pads off the brake disc.
      • Using mechanics wire, position the disc brake caliper out of the way.
    1. Remove the brake disc.
  1. Remove the bolt retaining the parking brake cable bracket to the frame.

This may cause the toe link to separate from the knuckle during vehicle operation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    Remove the pinch bolts and disconnect the toe link and upper ball joint from the knuckle.
  1. s2n~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Support the rear suspension upper arm to prevent boot damage when removing the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle.
    Using a wood stick, approximately 450 mm (18 in) long and 25 mm (1 in) wide, support the rear suspension upper arm.

    Separate the outboard CV joint from the hub and rest the knuckle on a cushioned support.
    1. Using the special tool, press the outboard CV joint until it is loose in the hub.

Or: I'll bet ya a buck you have a selec-track 4x4. in which case, you need to replace the c/v joint on the bad axle. The joint is encased in a rubber boot... on yours it's likely torn wide open.
To remove, first put the spare on that wheel, or remove the center cap from the wheel that's there (small screws on the inside of wheel. Once back on car, with car lowered on ground, remove center nut that holds the axle into the hub. Put the nut on backwards and give it a smack with a hammer to get the axle spline moving free in the hub. Then, lift car up, remove wheel, remove brake caliper & rotor. suspend caliper with a piece of wire or good string so as not to put tension on hose. There are three bolts that hold the hub to the steering knuckle. Remove them using the access hole in the wheel flange. Or, some are removed from behind the steering knuckle. (locate them using bolt holes in hub on wheel side as a location reference. the bolt heads are usually 12point.) Use a chisel and lots of wd40 or other solvent, working on seperating hub from knuckle till it comes free. (place chisel at the parting line and use a hammer. Once it begins to come out you can use big screwdrivers to work it the rest of the way out. (careful not to damage it) Remove the backwards nut and slide the bearing hub off.
You should be now able to slide the axle out through the bearing hole. Axles with joints assembled are now just about as cheap as just the joint alone. It's much less work to get one. To re-assemble, sand off and lube the bearing hole and mating surface on hub. before replacing bearing, also lube the spline on the axle joint with good grease. Remainder of the job is just putting back what you removed. Torque center nut to 175lbs, replace cover and cotter pin if used on your axle
