How to activate the front passenger air bag

The dash light is informing that the passenger air bag if OFF and I want it ON; what must I do?

The passengers air bag is normally de/activated using the ignition key in the air bag switch. This could be located around the drivers console or in the glove compartment. It looks like a small slot and should state -airbag activate/deactivate or similar. Insert key and activate hopefully.

Does it have a key switch that engages the air bag on the passenger side this switch could be bad or seat pressure switch a scan tool can retrieve fault codes to repair this issue.

Is driver airbag still functional when passenger airbag light is on in a 2010 Chevy malibu?

(Owner Manual Page 2-68)
The passenger sensing system turns off the right front
passenger frontal airbag and seat-mounted side
impact airbag under certain conditions. The driver
airbags and the roof-rail airbags are not affected by the
passenger sensing system.
The passenger sensing system works with sensors that
are part of the right front passenger seat. The sensors
are designed to detect the presence of a properly-seated
occupant and determine if the right front passenger
frontal airbag and seat-mounted side impact airbag
should be enabled (may inflate) or not.

I'm not sure if a purse or other light weight objects would activate the passenger airbag but if your display is showing random passenger activation it would be best to have a qualified dealer check into it...better safe than sorry.

Where is passenger side air bag relay 2007 MKZ


There is no relay for the passenger side air bag . What seams to be the trouble ? There is possibly a code set in the air bag control module .
Air Bag and Safety Belt Pretensioner Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) The air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is designed to provide increased collision protection for front seat and second row outboard occupants, in addition to that provided by the 3-point safety belt system. Safety belt use is necessary to obtain the best occupant protection and to receive the full advantage of the SRS.
This vehicle line contains dual stage deployment (advanced restraint system) driver and front passenger air bag modules. These vehicles are also equipped with driver and front passenger safety belt retractor pretensioners. These vehicles can also be equipped with optional side air curtains that deploy from the A-pillar to the C-pillar upon a side impact. Vehicles with optional side air curtains are also equipped with seat side air bag modules in the front seats.
Side air curtains deploy from the headliner, protecting the first and second row outboard occupants during a side impact. Seat side air bag modules deploy from the outboard front seat backrest upon a side impact. In addition, a front impact severity sensor is mounted to the lower radiator support, a seat position sensor is mounted to the driver seat and a usage detection switch is added to the front driver and passenger outboard buckles. If equipped with optional side air curtain modules and seat side air bag modules, there are an additional 4 side impact sensors.
Vehicles are also equipped with an occupant classification sensor (OCS) system as part of the front passenger seat. The OCS system includes 2 OCS rails and an OCS module.
Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Indicator
The passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator is a visual indicator used to inform the front seat occupants of the passenger air bag deactivation state. The PAD indicator is a stand-alone lamp installed into the vehicle instrument panel in a position visible to each front seat occupant.
The restraints control module (RCM) controls the state of the PAD indicator through a direct hardwire connection, based on information provided by the occupant classification sensor (OCS) system. The PAD indicator is lit to indicate the passenger air bag module is disabled. An exemption to this is when the front passenger seat is determined to be empty and passenger safety belt buckle unbuckled, and therefore indication of a deactivated passenger air bag module is not necessary. In all other cases, the PAD indicator is unlit when the passenger air bag module is enabled.
When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the PAD indicator prove-out period is initiated by the RCM. The RCM briefly activates the PAD indicator to prove-out the indicator function and verify to the front occupants correct functional operation of the PAD indicator.
The PAD indicator will be lit/unlit within 1.0 to 1.5 seconds of a change of state from the OCS system.
When an OCS system fault is present, the RCM defaults the passenger air bag module to the last valid state received from the OCS system until the ignition switch is turned OFF. If the OCS system fault is still present when the ignition switch is turned ON, the RCM defaults the passenger air bag module to enabled regardless of the size of occupant in the front passenger seat. The PAD indicator will be unlit. For information on the OCS system, refer to Occupant Classification Sensor System in this section.
The following table indicates the passenger air bag status and the PAD indicator status based the size of the front outboard passenger occupant.

bad conection or broken wire under front seats theres conectors for seat belt tensioners all linked to air bag warning light have a look under your drivers and passengers seat make sure they aint pulled when the seats moved back n forth

I just bought a 2005 Ford f150 and the dash lite for the passenger air bag says it is off, how do I turn the passenger air bag on


There is a procedure in owners manual to turn pass airbag on & off. Also make sure nothing is in seat. Certain light weights will turn it off

I think that a scanner can clear the DTC (diagnostic trouble code).
It seems to me that if a problem is detected that the light will stay on to alert the driver until cleared.
General Information The supplemental restraint system was designed to provide increased protection in case of an accident for those in the front seat of the car, when used along with the safety belt system. The system MUST be disarmed before any work is performed on or around the supplemental air bag system. The system is an electronically controlled, mechanically operated system. The system contains two basic subsystems: the driver's side air bag module assembly and the passenger side air bag assembly, and the electrical system that connects them. The system consists of:
  • The crash sensors
  • The safing sensor
  • The air bag module(s)
  • The diagnostic monitor
  • The back-up power supply
  • The instrument cluster indicator
  • The sliding contacts (clock spring assembly)
The system is operates as follows: The system remains out of sight until activated in an accident that is determined to be the equivalent of hitting a parked car of the same size and weight at 28 mph (40 km/h) with the vehicle receiving severe front end damage. This determination is made by crash and safing sensors mounted on the vehicle which when a sufficient impact occurs, close their contacts completing the electrical circuit and inflating the air bags. When not activated the system is monitored by the air bag diagnostic monitor and system readiness is indicated by the lamp located on the instrument cluster. In the steering wheel and passenger side dash.Due to the age of the vehicle probably doesn't have the curtain "side" airbags.The airbags were designed primarily for head on collisions. How Air Bags Work To have a frontal (driver or passenger) air bag deploy, certain criteria must be met. One of these criteria is that the frontal impact must be within a 60-degree window, occurring within 30 degrees from the vehicle's centerline. Another key element is that the crash forces are equivalent to a head-on collision with an immovable barrier at 10-15 miles per hour. Because a typical automobile accident only lasts about 0.125 (1/8th) of a second, air bags deploy within 15 to 20ms after the initial crash impact. To create a protective cushion between the occupant and the vehicle's interior, the air bag inflates at speeds up to 200 mph within approximately 30ms after impact. This allows the occupant to contact a fully inflated bag within approximately 45 to 50ms after the initial crash impact. Approximately 100ms after impact the bag deflates.

03 ford f250 quad cab 4x4 the PAD switch appears to be faulty and maybe the PAD off light the blink codes are 2 5 i have tried to jiggle the key in the PAD lock and have gone off and on several times...

The cost of PAD SWITCH is near to $85. and yes it’s a dealers part/but some car parts store keeps the compatible PAD SWITCH parts with them.they are not original but compatible.

How do you remove or replace the passenger airbag on a 99 contour , Is it a whole dash unit? What holds the drivers bag in the steering wheel? I assumed it was a tork but not sure. Where is the control...

the air bag control module is under the console.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    1. Wait one minute.
  2. Remove the center console. For additional information, refer to Section 501-12 .

  3. NOTE: Contour shown, SVT similar.
    Remove the rear floor console screws.
    1. Move seat fully forward.
  1. Fully apply the parking brake.
  1. Detach the shift indicator selector bezel.
  1. Detach the shift bezel from the selector housing.
    1. Remove three bolts.
    1. Detach shift bezel from the console.
  1. NOTE: The rear floor console must be raised to disengage the front retaining clips.
    Raise and remove the rear floor console.
  1. Remove the four front floor console retaining screws.
  1. Detach the front floor console.
    1. Set the gearshift lever into position 1.
      Partially remove the front floor console.
  1. Disconnect the cigar lighter electrical connections and remove the front center console

    1. Depress the locking tang.
    1. Slide the locking bar back.
    • Disconnect the connector.

  1. Rotate the steering wheel 90 degrees to access and remove the Torx screw. Rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees to access and remove the Torx screws.

    • Disconnect the electrical connector.
    • Remove the air bag module.

  1. Disconnect the battery cables. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Open the glove compartment, press the sides inward and lower the glove compartment to the floor.
  1. Remove the passenger air vent duct.

    1. Disconnect the duct from the instrument panel register and remove.

  1. Remove the two retaining bolts securing the rear of the passenger air bag module to the cross-vehicle beam.

Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Switch
The passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) switch:
  • is located on the instrument panel to the right of the climate controls.
  • contains a light emitting diode (LED) that indicates when the PAD switch is activated (passenger air bag disabled).
  • allows the passenger air bag deployment circuit to be disabled using the ignition key.
  • should be used whenever a child safety seat is being used in the front passenger seating position.

Prove Out the System
Prove out the system means to turn the ignition switch from the OFF to the RUN position and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will either:
  • fail to light.
  • remain lit continuously.
  • flash.
The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the RUN position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and an SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of five sets of five tone bursts. If this occurs, the air bag indicator will need to be repaired before diagnosis can continue.

Active Commands
This command allows the technician to verify operation of the air bag indicator, passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) lamp and chime. When the air bag output command is executed, the indicator, the PAD lamp, chime and the chime are activated simultaneously for approximately four seconds. All devices are deactivated automatically.
