Turn engine by hand ( use a socket on the alt pulley) and watch crank shaft balancer look and drivers side of engine just between water pump and power steering a small pointer is on the timing cover bring the cut groove into the point slot this is Top Dead Center now remove distributor cap the rotor may be pointing to #1 electrode or # 6 electrode This does not matter follow the electrode down side of cap the rotor should point to this spot tighten distributor reassemble start engine check the PID data for cam shaft sensor offset it should be 0 to +4 degrees if not adjust distributor accordingly then rev engine to 1800 rpm to re calibrate adjustment and update scanner. done.

SOURCE: Service Engine Light came on. Had Clerk @ Auto

Probably can't hurt. The 300 code is ignition system/misfire. And the 440 code has to do with emissions. The misfire condition is probably causing a sensor to pick up a problem with your emissions

SOURCE: what causes service engine soon light to come on

This could be a number of things, that is why it is a good idea to have the engine codes read which many part stores offer for free.
The service engine light will go off if there is vaccum leaks, faulty sensors or circuits, or any electrical problems

I have 99 chev pu 4.3 just put new head gaskets on .now I can not get the timing cam retard off -22.whats wrong.everything was set at top dead center.dist lines up on mark 6 inside it. Help

the book shows chev 4.3 L is a v6 chain driven and the valve timing is correct when the two dots line up with each other
if it is the ignition timing that you are talking about you are probably 180 degrees out in the distributor setting
no 1 piston firing lines the rotor button up at no one HT lead and not no 6
all engines regardless are timed of no piston tdc and chev engines are around the 12 degrees btdc for operation

How to set timing for blue print s/b 396

If the engine has been blue printed with different pistons and cam the best way to set the engine time is to loosen the dist so you can turn it and then start the truck and move the dist to the rear until the engine misses or slows and then move the dist forward until the engine smooth's out and runs smooth. Once this is done quickly step on the gas and the engine should respond right now with no hesitation. You can also use this method for a regular engine timing setting.

Replace both heads in truck and timing is off cant get it back

pull the spark plug and bump the engine /stick your finger in the sparkplug hole when you feel air rush out the hole that's tdc on compression stroke ./all the old chev v8's mostly have the rotor pointing at #1 piston when installed.if you get it close and the dist doesnt drop down the last little bit to engage the oil shaft just apply light pressure on it and bump the engine , it will fall into place when it lines up .you should have marks on the dist telling you where #1 is.

I would test for a leaking intake manifold gasket. WITH A WATER SPRAYER , and the engine running at operating temps and at idle, spray some water where the intake meets the cylinder head. If you hear a little SUCKING SOUND, and the engine smooths out temporarily, thats it Hope this helps
