The code is for a faulty shift solenoid. A good transmission shop can give a price to fix this.
If the transmission is shifting differently, you may want to consult a transmission repair shop. They will tell you how much.

SOURCE: transmission

I recently ran into this same problem. My truck has 125,000 miles. The service engine light would come on from time to time. I did as you and got a P1870 code.

P1870
The transmission is in 4th gear with the TCC (torque converter clutch) engaged and the ECM has detected excessive slippage when comparing the input shaft speed to the output shaft speed.

Probable causes

  1. Towing a trailer.
  2. Transmission fluid level.
  3. Internal transmission failure.
In my particular case a fluid and filter change solved the problem. I do plan on dropping by the trans shop and let them do a complete service in the near future. (Fluid, filter, band adjust, and check pressure)

Good Luck.

The codes stored in the engine computer are needed to further diagnose this problem. To check the codes, go here!

Retrieve the codes in terminal A2. (and A6 if you have a non-turbo)

List the codes here and I can assist you further.

SOURCE: 4L60E won't shift to 3rd on 1995 Chevy Astro 2wd

do the pin point tests, these start witjh running a trouble code test, autozone and kragen will do this for free, if u haven't had the trans apart then cross out any crossed wiring issues, but I do think you will find a problem with the 2-3 shift solenoid, either the solenoid has failed or the connector has a problem on the outside of the trans.

Astro van won't start

Do you notice crank when you turn over the key in ignition to start. Does it turn over but does not start, or no start nothing at all. ---------- If its not cranking and nothing happens when you turn the key, then its battery and starter related problem, both needs to be inspected.Either battery is not completely charged or its weak battery, that is not holding charge or its faulty battery or its connections are loose.-------- BUT if it is cranking and not starting, this clears that battery has juice in it and battery is doing its job and other possibilities needs to be checked. -------- The other possibilities are ,is the fuel pump coming on when you turn the key to start,is the spark is noticed at spark plug, is the check engine light coming ON. You have to have the code pulled to see what it is. This MAY help but you should also have the fuel pressure checked to see if you have a blockage usually when a pump goes out the vehicle won't start or may just idle.GOOD LUCK

You should have a 4l60E in your astro van. Which is electrically controlled, so no vacuum modulator. However, to address the ventilation selector not working... look for a vacuum line exiting the firewall and going to the passenger rear of the intake manifold. You will likely find it broken or disconnected there.

Has the 'Check Engine' light come on? I had this problem at 30,000 miles and the trouble codes set were transmission component slipping. Ultimately required replacement of the transmission.
