Question about 2002 Pontiac Firebird
Driving around town and sometimes drive train makes thump or bang. Replaced rear end without success. Can get it to slam by manipulating clutch pedal. New clutch installed by dealer 50000 miles ago.
If you have a cable operated clutch then check the engine mounts especially the rear mount or reaction rod on a transverse transmission.. If you had a clutch problem it would be there all the time and the indications are that it would be slipping , shuddering , grabbing and generally be a pain in traffic. I would be looking for a reason to allow the engine /transmission to get out of alignment and cause binding of the drive shafts . If front wheel drive check cv joints and suspension points . If rear wheel drive check for problems in the slip joint or "u" joints.

SOURCE: front end vibration
To build upon what emissionwiz posted, the inner boot on the drivers side axle on the Grand Prix's seems susceptible to tearing. If this is the case you will see a greenish looking grease slug everywhere, even up on the bottom side of the hood.
I will second also that the CV joint can cause the vibration you speak of having personally experienced it in a Grand Prix.

SOURCE: 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3800 ABS Brake pedal will eventually reach floor after stopping while hold car stopped. Brake pads replaced less than 5000 miles ago. Fluid level at max and does not drop. O
I would replace the MASTER CYLINDER. BLEED AIR from master cylinder BEFORE INSTALLATION. Hope this helps

sounds like a tire may have a flat spot on it, causeing it to make a thump noise. the main cause for this is bad shocks or struts on that side.
