if you did not turn the engine over while you had the chain off the timing did not change. if you did there is a dot on the cam gear and the crank gear line them up and you'll be in time

Timing marks are not lining up when turning over the eng

Timing belt or chain?
If you have chain align the dark mark of the chain to gear marks and release the tentioner . after you turn one time the mark wont match to the chain for long time.
if you have belt. the marks are on the dots on the head and block and will match every second turn on crankshaft
after you install belt/chain turn with hand ,don't start till you're sure the piston don't touch the valve .
with chain you can mark a dot on the block and head with marker to see if will come back to the same spot on same time crank and cam but is not accurate .
good luck

I have 1998 hyundai excel twin cam l have just put cams out of 1999 excel and it sound like it has a lumpy cam now at lidle. Now my car smells like unburnt fuel.can this be from cam not being in right at...

double check all youre timing marks . loosten tentioner and adjust cam.then tighten chain .manually turn motor over twice then check timing marks again this is a little tricky sometimes because when you tighten the tentioner the cam will move. you have to have the chain in a spot to compensate for this movement.

I have a 2004 Chevy cavalier 2.2 double overhead cam and i need removal and instillation directions of the timing chain, along with diagrams

Those 2.2 Ecotech Engines are notorious for timing chain tentioner failures. The design is bad from the factory. Anew one from the parts store will be the new design and should come in the timing chain kit. The best way to give you direction on this is to go to the library and check out a chilton or haynes manuel for your car and you will have all the diagrams and directions you need.

What is the life expectancy of the timing chain for a Chevy HHR? It's a 2011.

If you are sure it's a timing chain and not a belt it should last the life of the engine. Timing belts on the other hand should be replaced around 50K to prevent catastrophic engine damage.

Jaguar X-Type cam belt

These are chain driven. The only issue I have seen with these are the chain tensioners breaking. Generaly with chain driven engines, the chain will last the life of the vehicle, unless something like the tensioner or guide brakes. If it does break repairs can be fairly expensive.
