Whenever your "Check Engine" light is on the computer has detected a fault. To find out what that fault is related to you need to have it "Scanned".

My 2002 dodge dakota sxt 3.9 v6 is running to warm

It could be a partially clogged radiator. You say it is running warmer than normal....how much warmer? If it is overheating, that is an issue that must be repaired ASAP. Otherwise, you may have some time to narrow down the options. Two quick things to check - shine a light through the radiator from behind when it is dark outside to see if the are any areas of the radiator that are not passing air through. Also, ensure that the fan shroud that surrounds the fan itself is properly in place. This ensures good draw through the radiator.

Better see a well qualified mechanic or your Ford Service center before the engine fails and you have to replace it.

PS - Never, ever put plain water in the cooling system. Because of the load today's engines put on the cooling system (trans coolers, A/C, etc.) a 50/50 solution of coolant - available pre-mixed at supermarkets, auto stores, etc. - is required. After you get it fixed, carry a bottle of the 50/50 mix in the trunk for future emergencies.

I have a 98 ford mustang 3.6 and my check engine

Take it to your local Auto Zone and get the codes read. They can print you a copy of what to check for. IF the fluid is not flowing at all then your water pump is not working, be it due to belt or bearing in the pump. Have you changed the thermostat? Does the car actually run hot or does the light/gauge just read hot?

98 Mustang v6 - no AC

Make sure the radiator pressure cap is the correct one and that the hose is not soft--check the lower hose and heater hoses for softness as well. They should be firm, but not hard or cracking. The temperature sensor is reporting normal operating temperature, so it and the thermostat are working correctly (hot water would blow out of the radiator if it were stuck). Check the cooling fan for free turning and no noise. Check it's grounding connection. Check the fuse box for blown fuses to the fan and to the A/C compressor. Make sure all the relays and fuses are firmly pressed into their sockets. Check the A/C compressor clutch winding for resistance--should not read infinity. Does the blower motor for the heater/A/C run when either is turned on? The A/C switch on the dash may be defective.

CHECK FOR OVER FILLED OIL LEVEL,DAMAGED BALANCER,LIKE DOES IT WOBBLE WHEN RUNNING OR PLUGGED CAT'S, THESE OLDER EEC IV IGNITION WONT NECESSARLY SET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WITH A IGNITION MISS. DID YOU WET THE CAR,IF DID MUST REMOVE ALL WATER,NO MOISTURE AT ALL. TRY PULLING OFF ONE WIRE AT A TIME AND SET IT IN A SAFE LOCATION AND RUN IT,SEE IF PROBLEM MOVES OR NOT. IF NOT ON A PARTICULAR WIRE THAT MAY BE YOUR SUSPECT.
